After 32 Years, It’s Sadly Too Late For The Biggest Star Trek Dream To Come True

With the success of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, it’s become clear that the chance of seeing William Shatner reprise his famous role as Captain James T. Kirk is likely gone. While the 95-year-old actor remains active, including appearances at Star Trek events, it’s been over three decades since he last played the iconic character.

William Shatner last played Captain Kirk in the 1994 film Star Trek Generations. With his permission, the movie famously killed off his character shortly after Kirk and Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) rescued the Veridian star system. Surprisingly, both Shatner and the Star Trek franchise kept Kirk dead, never bringing him back.

Captain Kirk has been reimagined with new actors in two separate Star Trek universes. Chris Pine took on the role in the alternate reality depicted in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek films. Meanwhile, Paul Wesley played a younger version of the original timeline’s Jim Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, with the blessing of William Shatner himself.

For the past 32 years, ever since Captain Kirk was written off the show, Star Trek has tried several times to get William Shatner to reprise the role in different ways. But these efforts never succeeded, except for one special instance.

William Shatner Almost Guest-Starred In Star Trek: Enterprise Season 4

Back in 2005, William Shatner almost appeared on Star Trek: Enterprise. He came up with a story idea, working with writers Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, where Captain Archer and the Enterprise would meet a villainous version of Captain Kirk from the Mirror Universe – specifically, Tiberius Kirk.

Tiberius Kirk first appeared in the second season of the original Star Trek series, in the episode “Mirror, Mirror.” A later story idea for Enterprise would have shown that Kirk survived the Tantalus Field weapon and found a new life in a separate universe. This concept wouldn’t have changed the events of Star Trek Generations, and it would have given actor William Shatner the chance to play an evil version of Kirk again.

William Shatner was scheduled to make a guest appearance on Star Trek: Enterprise, but it fell through because the UPN network wouldn’t pay his fee. UPN had already decided to cancel the show and didn’t want to spend extra money, even though Shatner’s appearance likely would have boosted ratings and excited fans.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Couldn’t Get William Shatner To Guest Star

Akiva Goldsman, an executive producer and co-showrunner for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, shared that he always wanted William Shatner to appear on the show. Goldsman and his co-showrunner, Henry Alonso Myers, made repeated attempts to have Shatner guest star throughout all five seasons of the Paramount+ series.

Okay, so here’s a fascinating ‘what if’ that never quite happened with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Apparently, the idea was to bring William Shatner back as Captain Kirk, revisiting the classic ‘City on the Edge of Forever’ storyline. But instead of a one-off adventure, they envisioned an entire alternate timeline! The pitch was that Kirk would have stayed in 1930s New York with Edith Keeler – yes, the Edith Keeler from the original episode, played by Joan Collins – essentially changing history because she didn’t die as she was supposed to. It would have been wild to see that play out!

Akiva Goldsman didn’t say why William Shatner wasn’t on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but it’s possible Shatner himself felt it was time to retire from the role of Kirk. This installment of Star Trek might be the last chance for him to play Kirk again.

William Shatner (Sort Of) Returned As Kirk In 2024

Many Star Trek fans might be surprised to learn that William Shatner has reprised his role as Captain Kirk in a way. He served as executive producer on the short film 765874 – Unification, created by Roddenberry Entertainment and OTOY, and directed by Carlos Baena.

The film Unification brings together years of Star Trek history and offers a heartwarming reunion between Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock – a moment that wasn’t shown in the official Star Trek storyline. Lawrence Selleck played Spock, while Sam Witwer portrayed Captain Kirk at different ages. William Shatner, the original Kirk, worked closely with Witwer, helping him capture Kirk’s mannerisms and providing voiceover narration.

As Star Trek looks toward the future with the upcoming seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and the premiere of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on Paramount+ in 2027, William Shatner has probably made his final decision not to return as Captain Kirk. However, Kirk’s impact on the Star Trek universe will continue through its various storylines and alternate realities.
