After 24 years, the Morrowind modders behind Tamriel Rebuilt aren’t afraid of a Bethesda remake akin to Oblivion Remastered as it would “ruin the game entirely”

As a dedicated fan, I’d put it this way: The masterminds behind one of Morrowind’s most impressive mods, Tamriel Rebuilt, express that they’re unfazed by the prospect of an official Bethesda Game Studios remake, like The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered. In their view, such a remake might potentially disrupt the intricate work they’ve put into their mod, and if it does materialize, they believe it could only add to the chaos.

In a recent chat with PC Gamer, the senior developer known as “Cicero” acknowledged that our project is progressing at an accelerated pace compared to earlier times. I’m estimating we might wrap things up by 2035, but remember, this is a projection. Since 2011 or so, I’ve been part of this team, and I’ve witnessed the ebb and flow of our work on TR. We’ve been in high gear since 2018, and it feels like we’re only picking up speed ever since.

Cicero’s statement holds true, as Tamriel Rebuilt, a renowned mod for Elder Scrolls III, has recently released its most substantial expansion yet – Grasping Fortune. This update not only introduced the Hlaalu capital of Narsis but also over 140 new dungeons and more than 270 new quests. The creator behind the creature animations, known as “Grumbling Vomit,” appears to concur with Cicero’s assessment, suggesting an even quicker pace: “I truly believe we can finish all of mainland Morrowind, perhaps even within this decade.

Grumbling Vomit comments, “We have a strong drive forward.” The key is deciding how much effort goes into enhancing what’s already in place versus introducing new areas. It’s intriguing that the Tamriel Rebuilt team remains unperturbed about the possibility of Bethesda developing a Morrowind remake, given that they’ve recently released an Elder Scrolls remake like Oblivion Remastered.

Cicero mentions, “I’m glad when Todd Howard expresses his disinterest in a Morrowind Remaster, as it would only complicate matters… A modernized version of Morrowind would undermine the game completely.” The developer doesn’t foresee such a project becoming a reality. “The truth is, Oblivion is simpler to remaster compared to Morrowind, so I don’t believe we’re concerned about it.

Although Oblivion Remastered was released, it surprisingly benefited Tamriel Rebuilt as their new expansion dropped only a week later, causing us to be drawn into the whirlwind of Elder Scrolls news. Meanwhile, Grumbling Vomit appreciates Morrowind’s greatness and desires more people to enjoy it, but he ponders about potential consequences for the modding community if an official remaster were to materialize.
