After 20 Years, Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf Is Officially Returning In New Sequel & It Changes Everything

Blair Waldorf, a popular character from the original Gossip Girl, is returning and will significantly impact the story as the franchise continues. Gossip Girl began as a series of books by Cecily von Ziegesar and later became a hit TV show featuring well-known actors like Penn Badgley (known for You), Chace Crawford (The Boys), Ed Westwick (Sandokan), Blake Lively (It Ends with Us), and Leighton Meester (Nobody Wants This).

As a longtime fan, I was disappointed when none of the original actors signed on for the 2021 Gossip Girl reboot on HBO Max – a show that, sadly, only lasted two seasons. Since then, the whole franchise has been pretty quiet. But now, there’s been a big development, and suddenly I’m starting to dream again about seeing those familiar faces back in the Upper East Side. This news definitely reignites hope that maybe, just maybe, the original cast will return!

Currently, there aren’t any plans for a new Gossip Girl TV series – no sequels, spinoffs, or reboots are in development. However, the Gossip Girl world will be returning in book form, and it will feature a familiar face: Deadline reports that a novel starring Blair Waldorf is being written.

Cecily von Ziegesar, who created the original Gossip Girl book series, is writing a new book focusing on Blair Waldorf. Fans can expect Blair’s return in Summer 2027—just over a year from now—bringing back the beloved character and the franchise that inspired a hugely popular TV show.

How Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf Sequel Changes The Game

The upcoming Blair Waldorf sequel is significant for the Gossip Girl franchise in several ways. Most notably, original author Cecily von Ziegesar is returning to write the book. She wrote the first eight Gossip Girl novels and later served as a creative consultant for additional books, prequels, and other related content, according to an interview with Town & Country magazine.

I was so surprised to hear Cecily von Ziegesar explain why she stopped writing the Gossip Girl books – she said becoming a mom completely changed her perspective and she just couldn’t write those stories anymore. So, it’s really exciting that she’s back! And get this – the new Blair sequel isn’t just a continuation, it’s set twenty years after the original books. That’s a huge jump in time and I’m really curious to see what everyone’s up to!

Blair Waldorf will be in her 40s and making a comeback to New York, determined to regain her prominent position among the city’s elite. This signals a fresh start for the series and the character, and could potentially lead to a sequel featuring the original cast. With Leighton Meester being 39, fans might even see Blair Waldorf appear in multiple future installments.
