After 2-Year Wait, John Wick’s Caine Spinoff Finally Starts Filming

The second spinoff movie was first announced two years ago, but development has been slow. Now, after a long wait, filming has finally begun.

Donnie Yen announced on Instagram that filming has begun for Caine, a new movie spun off from the John Wick series. Yen will return as Caine, the blind assassin from John Wick: Chapter 4 who was sent to eliminate John Wick. The project was first revealed in May 2024, and it was previously announced that Yen would also direct the film in addition to starring in it.

The John Wick Franchise Continues to Grow

As a big fan of the John Wick universe, I’m really excited about Caine – it’s the second movie to branch out and tell a different story within that world. We already got a taste of this with Ballerina back in 2025, starring Ana de Armas as an assassin on a revenge mission. It was cool seeing some familiar faces pop up in that one too! People have been hoping for a Ballerina sequel ever since, but so far, nothing official has been announced.

Fans can look forward to even more from the John Wick universe. Lionsgate has officially approved an animated prequel, with Keanu Reeves returning to voice John Wick. Another TV series, John Wick: Under the High Table, is also being developed. This comes after The Continental: From the World of John Wick, which had one season on Peacock in 2023. And, a fifth main John Wick movie is planned as well.

Donnie Yen Returns as Caine

The screenplay is by Mattson Tomlin, known for his work on The Batman and Terminator Zero. While the exact plot is still under wraps, the film will likely follow Donnie Yen’s character, Caine, as he navigates new threats while trying to build a relationship with his daughter. Rina Sawayama will return as Akira from John Wick: Chapter 4, continuing their conflict. The movie is envisioned as a Hong Kong-style action film, showcasing Donnie Yen’s martial arts expertise.

After the success of John Wick: Chapter 4, it was obvious fans wanted more, making a continuation of the story a logical next step for the franchise. Lionsgate’s Adam Fogelson expressed excitement about partnering with Donnie Yen, believing he has the creative vision to expand the John Wick universe in a way that reflects his unique filmmaking style and skills.

Caine does not yet have a set release date.
