After the positive reception to James Gunn’s Superman film, DC Studios is actively working on several new superhero projects. These include the HBO series Paradise Lost, which will explore the history of the Amazons of Themyscira, and a new Wonder Woman movie. This film will feature a fresh take on Diana Prince and establish her as a key character in the future of the DC Universe.
So, the buzz is building about who’s going to play Wonder Woman in the new DCU, and everyone’s throwing out names. I’ve seen a lot of people suggest Adrianne Palicki, who I think is fantastic – you might recognize her from things like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, John Wick, The Orville, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. But here’s a fun fact: she already played Wonder Woman! It was for a project that didn’t get a ton of attention back in the early 2010s, but it’s cool to remember that she’s got experience with the role.
Adrianne Palicki Played Wonder Woman in a Forgotten TV Pilot
More than thirty years after Lynda Carter finished playing Wonder Woman on television, DC and NBC tried to reboot the series in 2011 with Adrianne Palicki as the new lead. Palicki was mainly known at the time for her role as Tyra Collette on Friday Night Lights.
The 2011 Wonder Woman movie took some surprising creative liberties with the character, most notably by giving her several different identities. Beyond being Wonder Woman, she’s also Diana Themyscira, who runs a business selling Wonder Woman merchandise to finance her crime-fighting. Oddly enough, she also pretends to be Diana Prince, a regular civilian who spends most of her time relaxing and watching movies like The Notebook.
The show would have centered on Diana as she juggled her different lives, sought purpose, and fought supervillains threatening global destruction. Unfortunately, NBC decided not to move forward with the pilot episode, so it never aired. Some brief, uncompleted footage from the pilot does exist online, though.
The 2011 Wonder Woman pilot, which wasn’t picked up as a series, included some actors who later became well-known in superhero projects. Elizabeth Hurley played the villain, Veronica Cale, a ruthless businesswoman who creates a performance-enhancing drug to build a team of super soldiers. Hurley later appeared as Morgan Le Fay. Interestingly, Pedro Pascal was also in the pilot, playing Ed Indelicato, a police officer who becomes friends with Wonder Woman.
Pedro Pascal appeared in another project related to the Wonder Woman series, making this his second time working within that franchise. He’s also confirmed to play Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While both Pascal and Ron Perlman (Hurley) have acted in both Marvel and DC films, neither has been in as many superhero movies as the star of Wonder Woman.
Before becoming Wonder Woman, Adrianne Palicki had roles in DC pilot shows, including a guest appearance as a villain in Aquaman, though neither series aired. She ultimately found her breakout superhero role with Marvel.
Palicki Went on to Play Mockingbird in Marvel’s Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Only three years after starring as Wonder Woman, Adrianne Palicki played Bobbi Morse, also known as Mockingbird, in the show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. She first appears in Season 2, shortly after the villainous organization Hydra gains control of S.H.I.E.L.D. Bobbi eventually becomes a key member of Agent Phil Coulson’s team, but working with her ex-husband, Lance Hunter (played by Nick Blood), proves challenging.
Morse and Hunter became beloved characters as their complicated relationship was explored in seasons 2 and 3. Their popularity ultimately led to their departure from the show in season 3, with a spin-off series planned for them.
ABC decided not to move forward with the pilot episode, meaning it was never shown. While Chloe Bennet reprised her role in future projects, Adrianne Palicki didn’t return to the show. Despite discussions about a standalone series for her character in 2020, it didn’t happen, and Palicki hasn’t played Mockingbird since.
It’s been almost a decade since the show Marvel’s Most Wanted was canceled, and it now seems very unlikely that Adrianne Palicki will reprise her role as Mockingbird in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, the Disney+ series Hawkeye suggested they might rewrite her character’s history, implying that Laura Barton could have been Mockingbird all along.
Despite its cancellation, fans of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are still hoping to see Bobbi Morse return. With Disney+ bringing back characters and storylines from shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones, there’s a possibility that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. could be revisited as well.
Wonder Woman Is a Different Character After the DCEU
The 2011 Wonder Woman television pilot failed to modernize the character in a way that resonated with audiences. The unaired episode demonstrated a clear misunderstanding of Wonder Woman and her various identities, resulting in a disappointing and contrived attempt that likely would have upset fans if it had been broadcast as a series.
The character of Wonder Woman didn’t fully come into her own until the DC Extended Universe film of the same name. Gal Gadot’s portrayal emphasizes Wonder Woman’s origins as a warrior from Themyscira. This version of the character moves away from some of the more lighthearted aspects of the comics, presenting a tougher, more grounded warrior.
The DC Universe is revisiting Wonder Woman, and the new approach might include more details from the comic books than the previous movies did. James Gunn recently announced that a new Wonder Woman film is in the works at DC Studios, effectively starting the character’s story over once again.
I’ve been following the development of the DCU, and honestly, I’m getting a really good feeling about the new Wonder Woman. From what I’ve seen of the initial projects, it seems like they might be leaning towards a portrayal more reminiscent of Lynda Carter and Adrianne Palicki – a bit of a shift from Gal Gadot’s take on the character. If everything goes according to plan, I think we’re in for something special!
