Adam Scott is famous for his roles as Ben Wyatt on NBC’s Parks and Recreation and as the star of the Apple TV+ thriller Severance. However, he’s currently topping the charts for on-demand rentals with a comedy series many consider to be one of his best: Party Down.
As a big TV watcher, I’ve been noticing some interesting trends, and Party Down is a prime example! According to FlixPatrol, it’s actually cracked the Top 10 on the Apple TV Store here in the US – it’s currently at number 10, but yesterday it even climbed to number 7! It’s pretty cool to see, especially considering it came back after three years with a new season, though honestly, it didn’t quite get the huge boost everyone was hoping for when it was revived.
Besides Adam Scott, Party Down boasted a fantastic and funny group of actors. The series featured Ken Marino, Lizzy Caplan, Ryan Hansen, Martin Starr, Jane Lynch, Jennifer Coolidge, and Megan Mullally, including in the 2023 season revival.
What Was Party Down About?
The show followed hopeful actors, writers, and artists working as caterers for a company called “Party Down” while pursuing their dreams in Hollywood. Each episode featured a new event, bringing in a variety of guest stars and memorable characters.
Adam Scott plays Henry, the calm and practical member of a group who goes back to working for the Party Down catering company. The show features a fantastic cast, including recurring and guest appearances by stars like J.K. Simmons, Joey Lauren Adams, Ken Jeong, Kristen Bell, and many others – notably June Diane Raphael, James Marsden, Kevin Hart, Steve Guttenberg, and George Takei.
The show Party Down first aired on March 20, 2009, and ran for two seasons before being canceled on June 30, 2010. While critics loved it, the show didn’t attract a large audience and struggled with low ratings. Though it was canceled, Party Down gained a dedicated following and became a beloved cult classic.
Party Down’s Revival Was Also a Hit with Critics
The recent return of Party Down successfully recreated the show’s signature humor and the great connection between its actors, proving popular with both critics and longtime fans. It currently boasts a 93% rating from critics and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The show has been critically acclaimed, earning a 95% rating on the Tomatometer and an 87% audience score. Rendy Jones of RogerEbert.com praised it, saying the revival successfully combines the show’s signature humor and social relevance with a more mature tone, setting a new high bar for breathing new life into classic comedies.
Despite consistently receiving positive reviews, Party Down still didn’t become a widely popular show. The recent season was designed as a short, self-contained story, meaning it’s now the show’s final season. While Party Down didn’t get a long run, fans were thrilled to see the beloved catering team reunited on screen.
