Activision acknowledges RICOCHET Anti-Cheat integration was not up to mark

As a long-time Call of Duty enthusiast who has battled countless hours against both human opponents and nefarious cheaters, I can’t help but feel a mix of relief and anticipation upon reading about the latest updates to RICOCHET Anti-cheat. The struggle against cheating in Black Ops 6 has been real, and it’s heartening to see Activision acknowledging the issue and taking concrete steps to address it.

Players can expect more updates closer to Season 2 release early next year.

In their most recent update, the team behind Call of Duty offers information about their anti-cheat measures and development efforts. Initially, they admit that the incorporation of RICOCHET Anti-cheat fell short during Season 1’s release. The absence of this feature is especially evident in competitive gameplay, as it greatly affects players’ enjoyment due to an increased presence of cheaters.

The focus on Anti- Cheat and the Struggle

Immediately following the launch of BO6, I found myself facing a widespread issue with cheating in the game. This problem was so prevalent that it sparked continuous criticism across social media platforms from both casual players and influential figures within the gaming community. They voiced their concerns about the rampant cheating issues plaguing the game. On November 22, the developers publicly acknowledged this challenge and vowed to take action, promising to implement measures designed to prevent, identify, and banish cheaters from the game.

In an attempt to make the game cleaner, developers have set up mechanisms designed to detect and prevent kernel driver manipulations that could lead to memory alterations. Additionally, there are checks on both client and server sides to identify unusual activity, along with artificial intelligence systems aimed at identifying and removing accounts that violate the rules of the game.

  • Upgrades & Accounts: Account bans are now happening hourly due to increased velocity from several RICOCHET Anti-Cheat systems, in addition to the over 19,000 accounts we’ve removed recently. These updates to our systems mean enforcement response times are now quicker than they have ever been.
  • Leaderboards: The cleanup process has been updated for faster synchronization of leaderboard changes.
  • Investigations: We have significantly expanded our Replay Investigation render farm – the machines used to generate clips for examination. We’ve also ramped up the group dedicated to manually review clips (based on a priority order that favors detections). In the last several weeks, the Replay tool updates have been highly effective at validating detections and reports, providing further training for AI systems for the anti-cheat team, and removing cheaters.

Despite notable progress in minimizing cheaters and enhancing the gaming experience, the developers’ goals were not fully met. Kernel-level anti-cheat represents a significant leap forward in combating cheaters. Unlike traditional methods, this kernel-level anti-cheat system is preemptive rather than reactive, consistently staying one step ahead of potential cheaters. It requires more access to your computer, but it also guarantees the ability to halt the game or purge suspicious accounts after identifying malware or illicit software on users’ systems.

Plans to improve Anti-Cheat Systems in future seasons

In their most recent post, the development team confirmed their intention to enhance the RICOCHET Anti-Cheat systems for Seasons 2 and 3.

The RICOCHET Anti-Cheat group is determined to carry on its mission of combating cheaters for the rest of this month. Although we’ve made strides forward, we acknowledge that there’s still much work to be done, and we can’t wait to disclose information about our significant upcoming updates scheduled for the coming year.

As we inch ever closer to the start of Seasons 2 and 3, gamers like myself can look forward to uncovering more details as they’re revealed. In the meantime, it’s crucial that we secure our accounts by enabling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). This additional security measure will help safeguard our gaming profiles from potential threats. Excitingly, Black Ops 6 Season 2 is slated to kick off in January of next year!
