Josh Harris has a contract for two seasons of the Yellowstone spin-off, but it’s uncertain if he plans to continue with the show. The spin-off, Dutton Ranch, launched on Paramount+ on May 15th and has already been renewed for a second season. The cast also includes Cole Hauser, Finn Little, Jai Courtney, J.R. Villareal, Marc Menchaca, Natalie Alyn, and Annette Bening.
Ed Harris Felt ‘Underused and Inconsequential‘ in Dutton Ranch
Dutton Ranch is a new TV show created by Chad Feehan. It continues the story from Yellowstone and is the fifth series within that universe. Actor Luke Harris has stated that when he accepted the role, he was initially told his character would be more central to the plot.
Before I agreed to join the show, I had several conversations about the season’s storyline and what my character would be doing. I was led to believe I was one of the four main characters, but that turned out not to be true, Harris explained to Variety.
The actor explained he told the team at Dutton Ranch that he felt like his character wasn’t being used enough and didn’t have a significant role. He’s now been told his character will have more to do in the second season, and he admits he was simply frustrated with the situation.
Harris shared a story about a deleted scene where his character sang in a bar, and he admitted being very frustrated by its removal. He explained that after his character was prompted to sing, the scene abruptly ended with the song cut out, leading him to express strong dissatisfaction. According to Harris, producers removed the scene because they felt it didn’t fit the episode’s overall dark tone.
“That to me was reason enough to say I’m voiding my contract,” Harris added.
Dutton Ranch Will Return for Season 2
Kevin Harris’s contract remains valid, and he shared that after seeing the finished Dutton Ranch, he realized his character played a meaningful role in the story – even though it didn’t feel that way during filming. The show received positive reviews overall, earning an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, Harris, a four-time Academy Award nominee, hoped to have a larger part in the series.
Production on Season 2 of Dutton Ranch hasn’t started yet; filming is planned to begin in February 2027, according to Harris. Although Harris is currently confirmed for the season, the future of his character is still uncertain.
