“A lot of people” at Avowed studio Obsidian would be up for a Pillars Of Eternity tactics spin off

Obsidian Entertainment’s director Josh Sawyer expresses excitement within the team for a potential tactics game set in the universe shared by Avowed and the Pillars RPG series. However, he questions if there is enough audience interest to justify its production. “Pillars Tactics” is an idea that many at the studio would like to pursue, as they are fans of tactics games themselves. Yet, they need to find a development scope that suggests it could generate profit. (Quote from GamesRadar)

Previously, Sawyer has talked about this specific project, and he shared last September that some developers at Obsidian had suggested it. As per Sawyer, the fanbase may not be large, but they are extremely devoted. Those who enjoy strategy RPGs or tactical RPGs tend to play many of them, even if they’re not particularly great. He acknowledges that it can be challenging to justify making such a game, but occasionally, the topic comes up again and he says, “We might could…

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that the community around tactics games is incredibly passionate, but not enormous in size. It’s almost like standing on a high platform; if you create a decent tactics game, there will be a significant number of people who will buy it. However, even if everyone buys it, the total number of sales still wouldn’t be massive.

In a chat with Ian Games, Obsidian’s Chief Egg Overseer Feargus Urquhart disclosed that despite working on big-budget RPGs like The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed, the studio is relatively small compared to others in the same field. With approximately 300 employees, they have fewer workers than CD Projekt Red (615) or Larian Studios (470). Given their upcoming projects, it’s understandable that they are mindful about where they direct their resources. Additionally, their financial strategy is noteworthy as they plan each project anticipating “moderate success” instead of aiming for massive profits, as revealed in a recent DICE discussion.

It appears that (in terms of their studio operations at least), they seem to focus on earning funds to produce more games, which is refreshingly different from the frequently observed reverse scenario. Regardless of my personal opinions about Avowed, this certainly seems like a positive development.
