Ongbal, a skilled gamer known for completing incredibly difficult challenges in games like Sekiro and Elden Ring – including beating bosses without getting hit – recently finished Elden Ring’s hardest difficulty, Depth Five, on his own. However, he says it’s not an experience he’d recommend to others.
Depth Five was added in Nightreign’s latest update, Deep of Night, and you need to progress through the previous depths to unlock it. While earlier depths feature tougher enemies and unpredictable Nightlords, they also offer powerful new weapon and relic abilities that greatly expand your options for creating unique character builds.
Ongbal mentioned in the video description that they reached depth five after a lot of effort this past week. However, they admitted that playing at higher depths isn’t very fun.
Ongbal completed this challenging game solo, playing as the character Wylder. While the YouTuber usually enjoys using katanas and playing like he does in Sekiro, he initially preferred the character Executor, who specializes in parrying. However, his videos soon shifted to showcase Wylder’s gameplay. This is understandable, as Wylder’s fast movement and complex abilities have made him popular with dedicated Souls players.
What’s most striking about Ongbal’s Depth Five run isn’t anything special happening – there were no lucky item drops, dramatic events, or close calls. It was a straightforward, tough run where enemies were incredibly durable and dealt massive damage.
Ongbal’s character build focused on causing bleed damage. He used a special grapple and upgrades from relics, and consistently improved his starting greatsword throughout the game. He also equipped a Flamberge in his off-hand to enhance jump attacks with more bleed. Beyond that, Ongbal played exceptionally well, and for the Nightlord challenge, he fought a Fulghur that wasn’t in Everdark mode.
Ugh, that last wipe was so frustrating! I was on my second Depth Two run, and our team got completely taken out by a surprise Everdark Libra. To make things worse, its summons glitched and turned invisible, so we didn’t even see them coming. It’s too bad Ongbal’s run was so easy, honestly. The best part of Deep of Night, for me, is definitely experimenting with the new weapon effects. I’m really loving the bows that let you do cool stuff just by aiming – like casting Swarm of Flies or even inflicting Scarlet Rot instead of needing to lock on. It adds a whole new level of strategy!
