Taylor Sheridan Star Billy Bob Thornton’s Legal Drama ‘Goliath’ Is a 4-Part Must-Watch Gem

Legal dramas are consistently popular on TV. Classic shows like Perry Mason, Matlock, and Law & Order (along with its spin-offs) paved the way, and more recent hits such as Suits, The Good Wife, and Better Call Saul continue to draw viewers. There’s a unique excitement to courtroom dramas that keeps audiences engaged and makes the genre a lasting favorite.

Despite being a standout legal drama, Prime Video’s Goliath doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. The four-season series, starring Billy Bob Thornton – who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Taylor Sheridan‘s Landman – is incredibly gripping and consistently delivers satisfying resolutions. While lawyers like Saul Goodman and Perry Mason are often considered TV icons, Billy McBride from Goliath is the resourceful and determined advocate you’d truly want fighting for you.

Whatever Happens, Billy McBride’s Got You

Over the four seasons of the show, Billy McBride undergoes a significant transformation. Each season raises the stakes, with the opponents he faces becoming increasingly formidable. The first season focuses on Billy’s fight against his former law firm and his powerful enemy, Donald Cooperman (played memorably by William Hurt). Seasons two and three present Billy with entirely new cases, and the fourth season culminates in a major showdown against the pharmaceutical industry, featuring J.K. Simmons delivering an exceptional performance as the dual villains, the Zax brothers.

Throughout the series, Billy frequently works with dedicated partners who assist him in his challenging lawsuits against large companies. They also provide crucial support, helping him stay on track even when he’s struggling personally. Patty Solis-Papagian, played by Nina Arianda, and Brittany Gold, played by Tania Raymonde, are two of his main collaborators. Despite their different backgrounds, they consistently rally to help Billy in his ongoing fight against powerful institutions.

The show Goliath feels familiar to fans of legal dramas, but quickly evolves beyond the typical courtroom story. Each season follows McBride as he seeks redemption while navigating an increasingly dangerous legal fight. Billy Bob Thornton’s compelling performance keeps you invested, even when the plot gets complex and unpredictable. Unlike most legal shows, Goliath is genuinely gripping and full of surprises, making its four seasons a fast-paced watch.

A Great Basis for Thornton’s Character in ‘Landman’

Billy Bob Thornton is a remarkably versatile actor, demonstrated throughout his extensive career. His Academy Award nominations for both leading and supporting roles – in Sling Blade and A Simple Plan, respectively – highlight his ability to tackle vastly different characters. While he often plays similar types of roles now, he still brings depth and complexity to each performance. Before taking on the role of Tommy Norris in Landman, Thornton showed his talent for playing rebellious, anti-establishment characters like Billy McBride – the kind of compelling, gritty performance we expect from him.

In Goliath, he portrayed a dependable, though world-weary, professional – the type who always has a trick up their sleeve and enjoys a grand reveal. Tommy in Landman is perpetually exhausted – almost tired of life itself – and we’ve seen Billy from Goliath express similar disdain for his own life and choices. While their approaches to alcohol differ, both characters find comfort in drinking.

As someone who really loves Thornton’s Landman, I think you’ll be hooked by Goliath too. It’s a really solid legal drama – it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it’s got a bit more edge than a lot of the procedural shows out there. What really connects the two for me is the lead actor; he’s incredible at portraying these really flawed, complex characters. You’d expect typical heroes – a strong, successful landman or a slick lawyer – but Thornton plays them with this amazing mix of strong principles, a real desire for justice, and a whole lot of cynicism. It makes Tommy and Billy so much more interesting.
