The marketing for The Mandalorian and Grogu has shown the adorable alien doing things like nodding, using the Force, and enjoying a snack. But, according to Kathleen Kennedy, who recently told Variety magazine, Grogu won’t be saying any words.

Kennedy explained her thoughts on the future of Lucasfilm, arguing that keeping Grogu silent is actually a strength. She contrasted this with Yoda, who was known for his unusual way of speaking, and confidently predicted that audiences will connect with Grogu even though he doesn’t speak at all on screen.
The comments also highlight how Lucasfilm sees Grogu fitting into the broader Star Wars franchise.
A Lesson From E.T.
Kathleen Kennedy received an honorary award at the Golden Reel Awards in Los Angeles. While accepting, the well-known producer reminisced about working with Steven Spielberg on E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. She explained that while they focused a lot on how E.T. would look, the character truly came to life when they added his sounds – heavy footsteps and unique breathing. She said those sounds transformed E.T. from a prop into a believable friend.

The alien in the film, famously voiced by Pat Welsh, became known for some of the most memorable lines of the 1980s. Years later, actress Kathleen Kennedy drew a comparison between that alien and the character Grogu, noting that both succeed in conveying emotion and connecting with audiences without uttering a single word.
Interestingly, E.T. actually does speak in the movie – something the producer surely remembers! Throughout the film, E.T. gradually learns to communicate, and by the end, he’s able to clearly say, “I’ll be right here.”
Many viewers have noticed that Grogu’s baby talk sometimes sounds almost like actual words. Despite this, he hasn’t spoken clearly yet. Because his species ages incredibly slowly, Kathleen Kennedy has hinted that we might never actually hear Grogu say a complete sentence.
The Limits of Baby Yoda
Grogu, originally known as “The Child” on The Mandalorian and quickly nicknamed “Baby Yoda” by fans, became a huge cultural sensation when he appeared in 2019. By keeping him as a non-speaking child, Lucasfilm might be ensuring he remains beloved and recognizable.

However, some viewers worry this choice might hinder the character’s development. While Grogu will probably become more powerful with the Force, he’ll likely remain unable to speak beyond gestures and babbling. Eventually, some fans might start to feel that “Baby Yoda” is being used more as a promotional tool than as a significant character within the Star Wars galaxy.
The Future of Grogu at Lucasfilm
Kathleen Kennedy is transitioning leadership of Lucasfilm, including decisions about Grogu’s future, to Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan. It’s currently unclear what direction they’ll take with the character, and much may depend on how well Jon Favreau’s new movie performs. While Kennedy approved and is producing the film, the long-term fate of the franchise now lies with Filoni and Brennan.

If The Mandalorian and Grogu does well, Lucasfilm might stick with their current approach. However, if Grogu is going to become a more developed character, the studio will eventually need to decide if his lack of speech adds to his appeal or is holding the series back.
