Scott MacFarlane, who joined CBS News five years ago in a prominent role, announced his departure from the network on Monday.
MacFarlane told colleagues in an email that the departure is his decision.
MacFarlane expressed his gratitude for the chance to work with the skilled and dedicated people at CBS. He said he’ll always be proud to have been a CBS correspondent.
MacFarlane expressed excitement about having more creative freedom and the opportunity to pursue projects that align with his personal aspirations.
Scott MacFarlane is the first prominent figure to leave CBS News following Paramount’s recent acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on February 27th. If regulators approve the deal, CBS News and CNN are expected to merge.

I’m hearing things are pretty tense as Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount combine. It sounds like there will be job losses, and a lot of people are worried about how the new company will handle things, especially when it comes to staying on good terms with Donald Trump. It’s a big shift, and not everyone’s happy about it.
CBS News staff have expressed concerns about Bari Weiss, a writer known for her independent views and founder of the Free Press. She was recently appointed editor in chief by Paramount CEO David Ellison with the goal of shifting CBS News towards a more centrist political stance.
In the months ahead, Weiss is likely to revamp “60 Minutes” and other news shows on CBS.
News leaders at competing networks report a significant increase in applications from CBS News employees following recent changes and instability at the company.
MacFarlane reported on Congress and the Justice Department for CBS News. He was often on television during the network’s coverage of important events like the State of the Union and election nights.
In July 2024, MacFarlane was in Butler, Pennsylvania when President Trump was shot at. He was the first to report on what happened at the scene and how emergency teams responded, sharing details immediately after the shooting.
Prior to joining CBS News, MacFarlane spent eight years as an investigative reporter at WRC-TV, the NBC affiliate in Washington, D.C.
