Jessie Buckley is facing backlash online after sharing her preference between cats and dogs, and some worry this controversy could harm her chances at the Oscars.
Most experts predict she will win the Best Actress Oscar for her powerful portrayal of Agnes Hathaway, a woman dealing with immense grief, in Chloe Zhao’s film, Hamnet.
A recent interview from November revealed that the 36-year-old actress once gave her husband, Freddie Sorensen, a choice before moving in together: either his cats had to go, or she would.
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Jessie Buckley said she doesn’t like cats. Her co-star, Paul Mescal, jokingly agreed, exclaiming, ‘F cats,’ and both actors shared a laugh.
Ms. Buckley jokingly worried she might face backlash after revealing her husband already owned two cats when they began dating, calling it ‘bad’ and predicting she’d ‘get cancelled’ for the admission.
I had a really demanding cat – a real diva! She started deliberately pooping on my pillow as a way of asserting dominance. It got to the point where I had to draw a line and basically tell her it was either her or me, but I managed to establish myself as the boss!
Ms Buckley has now desperately backtracked to say she is a lover of cats, following the backlash.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she stated she needed to address something important for cat lovers everywhere.
I adore cats, so it was incredibly upsetting when I woke up this morning feeling like that love had disappeared. It bothered me all day and honestly made me feel unwell.
I just want to let cat lovers know – I actually tried out for a role where I would be a cat! There’s been some confusion about this because of something I said in an interview.
Someone asked me if I identify more with a cat or a dog, and I realized I’m probably 25% cat and 75% dog.
The actress known for her role in Hamnet revealed she auditioned for the musical Cats, but admitted it was the worst audition of her career.
She winced and admitted, “I made that face because my audition was terrible – honestly, the worst I’ve ever done.”
I was trying to act like a cat, but it was really hot and I was sweating. I even tried mimicking a cat by licking my paw, but it just didn’t work!
Ms. Buckley has won every award she was nominated for this season, including a BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Critics’ Choice Award.
Concerned fans said they worried that Jessie’s dislike of cats could backfire on her.
The situation is about managing the fallout from recent events. While voting for awards is finished, the actress needs to safeguard her career and ability to attract audiences to future films. Despite acknowledging her talent and saying they wouldn’t automatically dismiss her work, the speaker doesn’t believe her claimed change in perspective is genuine.
It’s too late to fix things – the damage is already done. Cat lovers won’t be pleased.
Facing difficulties with her Oscar campaign, someone expressed strong disapproval of an interview with Jessie, emphasizing a deep affection for cats and suggesting the interview was problematic.
‘Figured this was coming but I think Oscar voting closed before airtime,’; ‘That Oscar is secured.’
Everyone is excited to see if she wins her first Oscar on March 15th, or if the movie featuring cats will take home the prize.
