According to a new report, another Ghostbusters movie is in the works, as well as an animated TV series. Film insider Jeff Sneider has shared some early plot details and claims the movie’s working title is “Ecto.” Netflix is developing the TV show, with Elliott Kalan serving as an executive producer and writer.
New report reveals Ghostbusters movie and TV show in development
According to Jeff Sneider, a well-known source in the entertainment industry, another Ghostbusters project is underway – a new animated movie. This is in addition to the Ghostbusters series already planned for Netflix.
Recently on John Rocha’s podcast, THE HOT MIC, Gil Kenan (Sneider) revealed that two Ghostbusters projects are currently in development at Netflix: a new animated movie and an animated series. Sony is producing both of these projects.
Sneider revealed that details about the movie and TV show’s storylines are still secret, but he did mention the potential title of the movie. According to what he’s heard, it’s called ‘Ecto,’ and the story will be told from the ghosts’ point of view.
Sneider discussed the animated show, explaining it’s set in the 1990s when Walter Peck first ran for mayor, and that both this show and the movie are animated. He also believes both projects are targeting a similar audience to the show Stranger Things: Tales From ’85.
According to Jeff Sneider’s newsletter, The InSneider, Sam Jarvis—the writer known for Dollface—is writing the screenplay for Netflix’s upcoming animated Ghostbusters movie. Development on the project started back in 2022.
In October 2024, Gil Kenan, the director of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, confirmed that more Ghostbusters movies are planned. He told The Direct they are actively discussing future large-scale Ghostbusters films for theaters and promised more details would be revealed later.
Kenan shared that the Ghostbusters animated series is currently in development with Netflix.
