If you enjoyed Prime Video’s popular detective series Bosch, you might like Netflix’s new show, Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole. While Bosch ran for seven seasons and 68 episodes, the world of that crime drama isn’t quite finished yet.

The popular TV series Bosch, based on Michael Connelly’s novels, continued with the spinoff Bosch: Legacy after its original run ended. A second spinoff, Ballard, followed a few years later. Luckily, it looks like the new Netflix series, Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole, might be exactly what a lot of us Bosch fans need to fill that void!

The Norwegian detective series Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole is based on Jo Nesbo’s novel The Devil’s Star and features Tobia Santelmann as the iconic detective Harry Hole. Nesbo has said that the character of Hole, a rule-bending introvert, was initially inspired by Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch.

The upcoming series, Detective Hole by Jo Nesbø, follows detective Harry Hole as he hunts a disturbing serial killer and navigates corruption within the Oslo police force. Scheduled for release in March 2026, this series is essentially a fresh start for the character of Harry Hole.

What Harry Hole Has In Common With Harry Bosch

The 2017 film The Snowman, starring Michael Fassbender, was adapted from Jo Nesbø’s seventh Harry Hole novel. However, the movie was a critical and commercial failure, largely due to a hurried and problematic production process. Often making little sense, The Snowman is remembered as one of the most poorly made big-budget Hollywood films ever released.

Luckily, Jo Nesbo’s character, Detective Hole, feels fresh again because he shares a lot in common with Harry Bosch, a famously popular TV detective. Like Bosch, Hole is a bit of a rule-breaker – his dedication to justice and sharp attention to detail often lead him to operate outside the lines.

Both Harry Hole and Harry Bosch have a strong sense of justice and aren’t afraid to bend the rules to catch criminals. However, they both strongly dislike corruption within the police force. While Bosch’s personal struggles were a key part of his story over seven seasons of the Prime Video series, Hole battles similar issues with alcoholism.

How Detective Hole Can Become Netflix’s Next Big Crime Drama

Viewers love crime shows on streaming platforms, and those featuring complex, imperfect heroes – think characters like Bosch or Hole – are particularly successful. The new Prime Video series, Scarpetta, is following this trend, hoping to launch a series of shows based on Patricia Cornwell’s popular novels.

Netflix’s upcoming series based on Jo Nesbo’s novels has the potential to be very popular, similar to Prime Video’s previous crime show. Both feature a flawed main character and a gritty, dark tone. Whether “Detective Hole” will achieve the same level of success as “Bosch” remains to be seen when it premieres on Netflix.
