Scary Movie sequel sparks outrage for mocking woke pronouns: ‘They’re trying to be offensive!’

The next installment of the ‘Scary Movie‘ franchise won’t be released until June, and it’s already sparking debate among fans due to its potentially offensive humor.

After the trailer for Scary Movie 6 came out this week, some viewers were surprised to see the movie making fun of the use of inclusive pronouns.

The trailer begins with a shocking scene: a woman is attacked and stabbed by Ghostface while riding a busy New York City subway.

A passenger shouts, ‘He stabbed her!’ But the person being attacked, even as they’re being hurt, corrects them, saying, ‘Not her! My pronouns are they/them. He stabbed them!’

The scene has sparked debate online, with some people criticizing it as prejudiced against transgender individuals, while others are praising it for bringing back humor that challenges current progressive viewpoints.

One person said they weren’t bothered by the joke about pronouns in ‘Scary Movie 6,’ but disappointed it wasn’t more original or shocking.

They continued, saying, ‘It’s going to come across as prejudiced, we know. It’s like a bad parody movie. But please, at least try to be more amusing than Ben Shapiro.’

One person commented that the discussion about pronouns feels outdated and like a complaint from an older, conservative generation.

Someone else pointed out that the jokes seem deliberately designed to offend, but that kind of humor really isn’t funny anymore.

Despite the criticism, some have defended the situation, with one person pointing out the irony of transgender individuals claiming they aren’t bothered when it’s obvious they are.

Honestly, I totally get it. I might not always be up-to-date on everything, but that Scary Movie 6 trailer? It had me cracking up! It was genuinely hilarious.

The new Scary Movie, which will be released in June, comes more than a decade after the last entry.

Released in 2013, Scary Movie 5 marked a change for the series as it was the first film not to feature Anna Faris and Regina Hall in the main roles.

The movie was widely panned by critics and performed worse at the box office than any other film in the series.

The upcoming sixth film marks the returns of both Faris and Hall, as well as the Wayans brothers.

In a 2024 interview with People, Faris mentioned she’d only consider returning to the Scary Movie films if she could collaborate with Anna Faris and the financial offer was substantial.

She shared with the publication that she was eager to collaborate with Regina again, expressing a strong fondness for her.

Honestly, just being around Regina Hall always makes me laugh – we could spend all day cracking each other up! If I could have anything, it would be her… and okay, maybe a little money too, but really, it’s all about Regina!

Scary Movie 6 pokes fun at several popular horror movies, such as Terrifier, M3gan, Get Out, Longlegs, and Smile.

The new film comes after the tragic death of former Scary Movie star Jayne Trcka.

According to TMZ, the 62-year-old retired actress and bodybuilder died from heart disease, which was made worse by a broken thigh bone.

Long-term alcohol abuse played a role in the death of Trcka, also known as Kasie Cavanaugh, a professional boxer and wrestler.

Anna Faris launched her acting career in 2000 with the role of gym teacher Miss Mann in the hit comedy Scary Movie. The film was a huge success, earning $278 million worldwide and leading to five follow-up movies.
