Okay, so I just heard some news about Call the Midwife and it’s a bit of a bummer. Helen George basically said that when season 16 hits, things are going to feel different. Apparently, a few characters are leaving, and she’s warning us it won’t be quite the same show we’re used to. It’s a little sad, but I guess that’s just how shows evolve!
After the season 15 finale aired on BBC One on March 8th, the show will be taking a break and is expected to return for season 16 in 2027.
After airing a Christmas special every year since 2021, Call the Midwife will skip one this year. Instead, a prequel series will air in its place.

George previously warned the finale would be emotionally difficult for viewers. Now, he’s explained how the show will handle its temporary break before returning for a new season.
George mentioned that April will be a particularly difficult month for the cast and crew, marking the end of filming.
Trixie Mattel explained to Radio Times that they anticipate feeling the impact of a work slowdown most strongly in April, as that’s typically when filming begins. Without that work, they’ll miss the sense of community and support it provides.
Laura Main, who plays Nurse Shelagh Turner, explained that after the first season, the cast always felt confident they would be back for more episodes after wrapping up filming.

She explained that they learned after just two episodes in the first season that the show would be renewed. This has given them a remarkable and consistent run of fifteen years, and they’ve never faced the uncertainty of a potential cancellation before.
George explained that this is only temporary, as they expect things to return. However, he acknowledged it won’t be exactly the same, with people moving on and changes happening.

Call the Midwife, created by Heidi Thomas, has followed the nurses and midwives of Nonnatus House in London’s East End for many years, spanning several decades. While season 15 suggested the team might move locations, Thomas has promised the finale will offer more hints about where Nonnatus House will be headed next.
Fans can also look forward to a new series set during World War II, planned for release later this year. A film taking place in 1972 is also currently being developed.
Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
