Cancelled Star Wars Series Would Have Shown Yoda’s Dark Side, Confirms Creator

Leslye Headland, the creator of The Acolyte, has shared that a second season, had the show not been cancelled, would have shown a different, more complex side of Yoda. While Yoda is generally known as a wise and virtuous Jedi Master dedicated to the good side of the Force and mentoring countless Jedi, the show would have explored some of his more ambiguous actions and moments.

Yoda appears across many different periods of Star Wars, and his story is now being explored even further back in time with the series The Acolyte. Set during the final years of the High Republic, The Acolyte reveals how the Dark Side and the Sith first arose while the Jedi were at their most powerful. Because Yoda ages very slowly, he made a quick appearance in the last episode, suggesting he could have played a bigger part if the show continued.

Despite its cancellation after just one season, The Acolyte‘s creator has shared what future storylines might have held for Yoda. When asked on The George Lucas Talk Show if Yoda would have assisted in covering up Vernestra’s actions, the creator confirmed he definitely would have, meaning the Jedi Master would have participated in concealing some potentially problematic behavior within the Jedi Order.

Jedi Master Vernestra wrongly blamed Sol for the deaths of several people, including Indara, Torbin, Kalnacca, Jecki, and Yord. However, Sol was actually killed by Osha, who turned to the dark side after discovering Sol’s involvement in her mother’s death, and then joined forces with Qimir.

To shield the Jedi Council from further investigation by the Galactic Senate, Vernestra falsely accused Sol, portraying him as a rebellious outcast. Because Sol had already died, he couldn’t defend himself against her accusations. It was also revealed that Vernestra had a past connection to Qimir – he used to be her apprentice – suggesting her cover-up might have been an effort to protect him as well.

In the final episode of The Acolyte, Vernestra seeks out Master Yoda, telling him, “we need to talk.” It seems she intended to reveal her efforts to conceal the actions of Qimir and Osha. Now, comments from the show’s creator confirm Yoda would have helped her cover it up, suggesting a darker side to the Jedi Master – one willing to lie and deceive to protect the Jedi Order’s secrets.

Headland pointed out that fans shouldn’t criticize her online, noting that Yoda often uses similar phrasing in The Clone Wars.

Yoda inadvertently contributed to the Jedi’s destruction by calling upon the Clone army, even though he had doubts about them. This decision led the Jedi into a full-scale war, which went against their long-held principles as peacekeepers. Ultimately, this proved disastrous when Palpatine took command of the Clones and issued Order 66, nearly eliminating the Jedi Order.

The Star Wars series The Acolyte explored events that happened decades before the main story, showing how the Jedi Order began to fall apart while being scrutinized by the Senate. Featuring Amandla Stenberg, Manny Jacinto, Lee Jung-jae, and Carrie-Anne Moss, the show unfortunately ended after just one season, finishing with a dramatic finale in 2024 and leaving viewers wanting more.

A Dark Side, Yoda Has

The ending of The Acolyte featured Yoda in a way that suggests he could have a more significant part to play if the show gets a second season.

Fans understand that Yoda, while generally a good person in the Star Wars stories, wasn’t perfect and did make errors. He usually acted according to his own strong sense of what was right, especially when it came to protecting the Jedi.

He initially deployed the clone army simply to save Mace Windu, Anakin, and other Jedi during the battle of Geonosis, but once he did, there was no turning back, and the Jedi Master was left with lasting remorse. In the same way, if The Acolyte had been allowed to proceed, Yoda concealing the truth about Sol and Qimir would probably have lessened scrutiny during the Senate’s investigation, potentially allowing the Jedi Order to endure.

Putting Yoda in that situation would be tricky, though he’s hidden things before. Deception is usually associated with the Dark Side, but The Acolyte demonstrated that the line between good and evil in the Force isn’t always so clear. Exploring that gray area through Yoda’s character would have been fascinating, especially considering his future actions in the Star Wars saga.
