Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s mastermind, has spilled the beans on how artificial intelligence is beginning to give Ethereum a major facelift.
In a recent post on X, he shared a mind-blowing experiment where AI managed to “vibe-code” Ethereum’s 2030 roadmap in just a few weeks. Yes, you read that right-weeks! The result? A little dazzling, a little terrifying, and oh-so-experimental.
The project was slapped together without even bothering to finish Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). Let’s just say, if there are bugs in the code, it’s practically a feature. And some features? Only half-baked. Six months ago, even thinking about this level of madness would’ve been a dream.

He pointed out LeanEthereum, a research project out to mathematically verify Ethereum’s inner workings. One partner even used AI to create a machine-verifiable proof for a complex theorem behind STARK-based cryptography.
STARKs, you ask? They’re the backbone of zero-knowledge proof systems, essential for scaling blockchain networks. Producing formal proofs for these systems used to be as tedious as watching paint dry, but AI is cutting the effort in half.
Formal verification is like a magnifying glass for code, ensuring it behaves exactly as planned. And when it comes to blockchain security, it’s all about preventing weaknesses that could lead to nasty hacks or financial disasters.
Raising the Bar for Security (But Don’t Expect Perfection)
Let’s be real: Buterin knows that bug-free software is a pipe dream. Code will never perfectly match every human intention. We’re not building robots with hearts of gold here.
However, he argues that with verifiable security guarantees, we can squash most of the risks. No more depending on humans to keep watch or hoping for the best. AI and better verification standards can push Ethereum’s security to levels that will make hackers cry.
