Ryan Gosling reveals why he had “total faith“ in Star Wars: Starfighter director Shawn Levy.
The new Star Wars film is being presented as a self-contained story with a completely fresh set of characters. This is different from every Star Wars movie released since the original in 1977, which have always featured characters from earlier films, often as the main focus. Despite excitement for Starfighter, some are concerned about director Levy’s significant changes to the movie’s ending, which he discussed on the On Film… With Kevin McCarthy podcast.
Ryan Gosling recently spoke with ScreenRant about his new film, Project Hail Mary. While he couldn’t discuss details about the movie’s ending, he shared his complete trust in director Shawn Levy, jokingly calling him “the mailman because he always delivers.” Gosling is confident audiences will share that same feeling of trust once they see the finished film. You can read his full comments below.
I can’t get into the details of that situation, but I really enjoyed working with Shawn and always believed in him. I started jokingly calling him ‘the mailman’ because he consistently gets the job done. While making this project, I realized – and I think the audience will agree – that he always delivers on his promises.
Ryan Gosling’s recent praise for director Shawn Levy isn’t surprising. It aligns with the positive things Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy said about Levy when she left her position, and Levy is generally known as a dependable professional. Unlike some other Star Wars films that faced director changes and significant behind-the-scenes issues, the making of Starfighter was reportedly a seamless experience, and Gosling’s comments suggest this is true, highlighting how well they worked together.
Changes and revisions are common in Star Wars films – from George Lucas’ initial plans for twelve movies to the extensive rework of Rogue One. Director Gareth Edwards has said the same is true for Starfighter, explaining that the changes made to the film’s ending actually improved the story. He’s quoted as saying he’s thankful the original plan didn’t work out, because the new direction was far better.
Details about the plot and characters of Starfighter are still secret, but the film takes place several years after The Rise of Skywalker. This means it will introduce new stories and events within the established Star Wars universe. The movie stars Ryan Gosling, alongside Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. Reports suggest that Matt Smith and Mia Goth will play the villains, chasing Flynn Gray’s character, with Ryan Gosling acting as his protector. Originally, the role now played by Mia Goth was offered to Mikey Madison, an Academy Award winner.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m so excited! It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything new on the big screen, but thankfully, we’re getting The Mandalorian and Grogu in theaters on May 22, 2026. And get this – that’s just the beginning! They’re planning to release Star Wars: Starfighter on May 28, 2027, which will be the 50th anniversary of the very first Star Wars movie. It’s going to be an amazing couple of years for the franchise!
