Wunmi Mosaku, nominated for an Oscar for her role in ‘Sinners,’ has said she hasn’t been able to fully enjoy the recognition because of the ongoing political turmoil in the United States.
The 39-year-old British actress, now living in Los Angeles, has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards thanks to her performance in the hugely popular vampire film that launched her career.
Expecting her second baby, Wumni expressed concern about President Trump’s policies on immigration and the increased ICE raids happening nationwide.
She explained that she hadn’t felt able to celebrate due to the recent tragic events, including the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti at the hands of ICE agents in Minnesota, and the abduction of a five-year-old child.
It’s strange to experience such contrasting emotions at the same time – feeling incredibly happy about the nomination, yet overwhelmed by the grimness of the news. It feels almost like something out of a bad future, and it’s hard to imagine celebrating normally right now.
Renee Good and Alex Pretti were both killed by ICE agents. Five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken into custody as he was coming home from school.
Originally from Nigeria, she moved to Manchester with her family when she was young, and later relocated to Los Angeles to become an actress.
The actress, married to an American, recently told The Sunday Times that she never intended to raise her children in the United States. She expects to relocate, but hasn’t decided on a location yet.
I’ve been dreaming of living somewhere closer to nature, maybe even Tanzania. Honestly, it’s difficult to imagine returning to Manchester after experiencing the amazing weather in Los Angeles – it definitely makes you get used to being comfortable!
This happened after Donald Trump stopped his strict immigration enforcement efforts in Minnesota, which followed the deaths of two Americans shot by federal agents.
As a lifestyle and community expert, I’ve been following the situation at the border closely, and it’s been quite a shift recently. Just a few weeks ago, the President sent Tom Homan, a key figure in border security, to Minnesota to really ramp up enforcement efforts – what they called ‘Operation Metro Surge.’ But now, that operation has ended. Interestingly, this move also meant reassigning Greg Bovino, a Border Patrol agent who works closely with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. It’s a reminder that things on the ground can change quickly, and personnel shifts can signal a change in strategy.
Reene Good and Alex Pretti were fatally shot by immigration agents in January during a deportation effort. Public opinion polls indicate voters disapproved of the shootings, which could create political challenges for the Trump administration as the midterm elections approach.
Donald Trump’s recent shift in approach to immigration in Minneapolis is surprising. After winning the election with a strong focus on deportations, the President is now taking a different path.
Following unfavorable news reports and repeated legal challenges from Democratic governors and attorneys general, Trump’s plans for immigration are facing greater opposition than before.
Should the spotlight celebrate achievements instead of activism?

I’ve been following the situation closely, and it’s been a really dynamic couple of weeks. I was relieved to hear Homan announce at the press conference in Minneapolis that he’d recommended, and President Trump agreed, to bring this surge operation to a close. It feels like a positive step forward.
Thanks to the work done under President Trump, the Twin Cities and Minnesota are currently safer, and that positive trend is expected to continue.
Homan pointed out that local police and government officials have been collaborating with ICE, letting them make arrests directly within jails.
Sinners is nominated for a staggering 16 Academy Awards, the most of any motion picture in history.
Previously, Titanic, All About Eve, and La La Land all shared the record for the most nominations, each receiving 14.
Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan playing two roles: twin brothers with a history of crime. They’re forced to confront a dangerous vampire threat while living in the racially segregated South during the Jim Crow era.
The movie received widespread praise and became another big hit for the director of Black Panther, solidifying his place among the most celebrated filmmakers in Oscars history.
The film ‘Sinners’ is up for several awards, including Best Picture. Ryan Coogler is nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, while Michael B. Jordan is competing for Best Actor – putting him in the same category as Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred in ‘Titanic’.
Titanic, Ben-Hur, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King share the record for the most Academy Awards, each having won 11 Oscars.
Delroy Lindo’s performance as pianist Delta Slim in Sinners has earned him a nomination for best supporting actor, and Wunmi Mosaku is nominated for best supporting actress for her role as Annie, the separated wife of one of the twin characters played by Jordan.
As a huge fan, I’m thrilled to see ‘Sinners’ getting recognized in so many areas! It’s not just the story – the visuals are stunning, the music is incredible, and everything from the hair and makeup to the costumes and special effects is top-notch. Plus, the editing, sound, production design, and even the casting all deserve awards, honestly!
Miles Caton performs “I Lied to You,” a song nominated for Best Original Song. The music and lyrics were created by Ludwig Goransson and Raphael Saadiq.
The nominees for Best Picture are: Sinners, Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, and Train Dream.
