Okay, so it’s official! I’m hearing that Nicolas Cage and director John Woo are teaming up again – can you believe it? They’re finally starting production this summer on Gambino, a biopic about the infamous mob boss Carlo Gambino. We first heard about this project back in November 2025, and now, thanks to a report from ScreenDaily, it sounds like they’ve locked down a filming schedule. I’m definitely excited to see these two work together again – Face/Off is a classic!
According to the report, Gambino will be the first of eight films funded by Icarus Entertainment Fund and NextG Brothers Fund. These companies aim to establish a complete film production hub in Atlanta, offering financing, production, and post-production services. Edward Zeng, founder of NextG, shared details with Screen magazine.
We’ve spent three years developing this film, and our goal is to create something truly memorable that will draw audiences back to the cinema.
Filming for the $40 million movie Gambino will start this summer, with locations in Georgia, New Jersey, New York, and Sicily. Nicolas Cage stars as Carlo Gambino, a Sicilian immigrant who rose to become a powerful and influential figure in New York’s criminal underworld. The film follows Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jimmy Breslin’s investigation into Gambino’s life after his death, exploring the man behind the notorious reputation. Through interviews with those who knew him – both friends and enemies – Breslin reveals the ruthless ambition that allowed this outsider to achieve power and reshape ideas of loyalty and the American dream.
Woo is hoping his reunion with John Travolta goes better than their previous collaboration, the poorly received 2018 film about John Gotti. Woo first gained fame as a highly successful action director in Asia during the 1980s, then moved to Hollywood in the 1990s. While Face/Off was a major hit for him, later films like Mission: Impossible II and Paycheck weren’t as successful.
Nicolas Cage has experienced a remarkable career comeback recently, earning critical acclaim for films like Pig, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Longlegs, and Arcadian – some of his best work in two decades. This May, he’ll appear as a Spider-Man version in the Prime Video series Spider-Noir, which is generating a lot of buzz and could be another major success for the actor.

Nicolas Cage and John Woo are famous for their work on Face/Off, but they teamed up again in 2002 for the war film Windtalkers. The movie, which also featured Mark Ruffalo, Adam Beach, Christian Slater, and Peter Stormare, received generally mixed reviews and didn’t perform well in theaters. While it earned $76.7 million worldwide, it cost $115 million to make.

As a big fan, I was really hoping to see Nic Cage and John Woo team up again after Windtalkers didn’t quite hit the mark. Luckily, with how well Cage has been doing lately, it feels like anything could happen! There’s even talk of a Face/Off sequel with him and John Travolta, which would be amazing. Though Adam Wingard is supposedly directing, it’s been quiet on that front for over a year. We’re all eager to see Cage and Travolta share the screen again, but for now, it’s a waiting game while Cage keeps adding exciting new projects to his schedule.
