A fantastic historical action movie is currently available to stream for free, but only for a limited time. Released in 2006, Apocalypto often gets overlooked compared to other films in the genre, like Ridley Scott’s Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven. However, many would argue that Apocalypto is just as good as Gladiator, and even better than those other titles. Check it out for yourself while you can!
The movie Apocalypto is currently available to watch for free on Tubi, but it won’t be there much longer. It’s listed as leaving the platform soon. While the Mayans famously predicted the world would end in 2012, there’s no exact date for when Apocalypto will be removed from Tubi. Films on Tubi usually rotate in and out each month, so it’s likely the movie will be gone by the end of February.
Mel Gibson directed and helped write the film Apocalypto, collaborating with Farhad Safinia. The movie follows Jaguar Paw, played by Rudy Youngblood, a Mayan hunter whose village is captured by a rival group. Rather than being immediately killed as a sacrifice, Jaguar Paw is pursued as part of a deadly game, giving him a chance to escape and make his way back to his family.
‘Apocalypto’ Is Just As Good as ‘Gladiator’
Saying Apocalypto is better than Gladiator is a strong claim, considering Gladiator is widely regarded as a cinematic masterpiece and a leader in historical action films. Russell Crowe’s performance as Maximus is iconic, and the Colosseum scenes remain thrilling and impressive. However, Apocalypto delivers all of those same qualities, and arguably even surpasses them.
Instead of ancient Rome, Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto plunges us into the jungles of Mesoamerica. While Jaguar Paw isn’t a Roman soldier, he’s just as skilled in battle. The film begins with prisoners being taken to a new civilization, but the pace quickly accelerates when Jaguar Paw escapes and is relentlessly pursued. He cleverly turns the tables on his captors, using traps and his own cunning. Adding to the danger, the wild jungle itself presents a constant threat. Apocalypto is a thrilling and desperate story of Jaguar Paw’s fight for survival against overwhelming odds, with everything – and everyone – trying to kill him.
‘Apocalypto’ One-Ups ‘Gladiator’s Most Intense Scene

20th Century Studios
The tiger battle in Gladiator is famous for being incredibly exciting, and famously, one of the tigers almost attacked Russell Crowe. But the climax of Apocalypto takes animal-based suspense even further. In a thrilling hunt, the hero Jaguar Paw is pursued by – fittingly – an actual jaguar. Director Mel Gibson insisted on using a real, trained jaguar instead of computer-generated effects. While the actors were protected by hidden barriers, the jaguar occasionally got dangerously close. The result is a truly unforgettable chase scene, considered one of the best ever filmed.
