Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance sparked controversy even before it began. Some conservatives criticized the Puerto Rican singer for his political views, particularly his recent criticism of Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Grammy Awards, where he won Album of the Year.
Although many fans enjoyed the Latin artist’s 13-minute performance on Sunday – even after President Donald Trump called it “absolutely terrible” and disrespectful to the United States – one Republican critic is now taking their disapproval a step further.
On Monday evening, Representative Andy Ogles of Tennessee posted a letter on X (formerly Twitter) requesting that the House Energy and Commerce Committee investigate the National Football League and NBCUniversal. He wants them to look into what he claims is evidence the League and broadcaster knew about and approved a performance with sexually suggestive lyrics and dancing.
Okay, so I saw this post by Ogles about the halftime show, and honestly, I was shocked by what he said. He called it totally inappropriate – like, he used the word “smut”! He claimed there were really explicit things happening, specifically mentioning what he saw as overly sexual dancing and even described Bad Bunny’s performance in a way that was, well, pretty graphic. He also said that because Bad Bunny sang mostly in Spanish, the lyrics were basically celebrating things he found deeply offensive. It was a really strong reaction, and honestly, a bit over the top, in my opinion.
The Tennessee state representative, praised by Trump as a “Conservative Warrior,” wrote to the House committee claiming that songs like “Safaera” and “Yo Perreo Sola” performed by Bad Bunny contained sexually suggestive lyrics that would be understood by anyone, regardless of whether they speak Spanish.
Bad Bunny performed his song “Safaera” during the halftime show, but he skipped the most explicit lyrics, which included suggestive phrases in Spanish like “My d-ck is being chased and I want you to hide it” and “If your boyfriend doesn’t eat your ass / He better f-ck off.”

Ogles believes it’s very unlikely the NFL and NBC didn’t know what would be in the Super Bowl halftime show. He asked the House committee to investigate how much the executives and producers knew about the songs, the dancing, and how the show was reviewed and translated. He also wants them to determine if standard safety measures – like broadcast delays and content reviews – were followed correctly or deliberately ignored.
Ogles stated that these openly offensive acts are against the law when broadcast publicly. He also warned that American culture won’t be ridiculed or damaged without repercussions.
TIME reached out to the NFL and NBC for comment.
Ogles previously stated on X (formerly Twitter) that Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show demonstrated why Puerto Rico should not become a U.S. state.
Florida Representative Randy Fine, a Republican, claimed on X (formerly Twitter) Monday that the Super Bowl halftime show was “illegal.” He shared translated lyrics from the song “Safaera,” even though Bad Bunny didn’t perform all of those lines. Fine plans to send a letter to Brendan Carr, the chair of the Federal Communications Commission and an ally of Donald Trump, asking for strong consequences for the NFL, NBC, and Bad Bunny. These consequences could include fines or a review of the networks’ broadcast licenses. Carr previously pushed ABC to suspend Jimmy Kimmel last year.
Knowing Bad Bunny’s performance would likely cause criticism, the conservative group Turning Point USA organized their own event aimed at attracting supporters of Donald Trump. Dubbed the “All-American Halftime Show,” it featured musician Kid Rock, a known supporter of Trump. While Kid Rock didn’t perform his controversial song “Cool, Daddy Cool” – which contains lyrics some consider exploitative – he did perform “Bawitdaba,” including a verse referencing topless dancers and sex workers in Hollywood.
