It wasn’t an actor like Johnny Depp, but director Gore Verbinski – the creative force behind the first three popular films. Verbinski, who successfully blended family fun with a bit of adventure, has revealed he won’t be directing the new installment. This news has dampened excitement for Disney’s planned revival of the franchise.

The most recent Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Dead Men Tell No Tales, came out in 2017 after a troubled production that caused significant delays and a much higher budget than planned. While not a flawless continuation of the series, it brought back the most important characters, which likely contributed to its nearly $800 million worldwide box office success.

The fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film signaled the end of the line for the series, as it didn’t resonate with viewers or critics. However, with so many reboots and revivals happening now, Pirates is one of the few franchises that could potentially succeed. While promoting his new movie, Gore Verbinski discussed the possibility of directing a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film with Screen Rant. He was direct when asked if he’d return at Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer’s request, stating that he’s moved past that stage of his career.

I wish them all the best. I’m just currently without resources. I put in a lot of effort – I feel like I gave it my all – and it was a valuable learning experience for me, a chance to try something new.

Bringing back the Pirates of the Caribbean movies is proving difficult. The series has its own established style, but finding the right mix of adventure and fantasy relies heavily on the director they choose. It’s also crucial to handle the returning characters well to make a new film successful. While the script is being developed, producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney are facing a real challenge, especially as the project moves forward without many of the original stars and filmmakers.

However, simply bringing them back for nostalgia’s sake without a good story wouldn’t be satisfying for anyone.
