I was really saddened to hear about the passing of Kavinsky, the French electronic artist behind the incredibly atmospheric track “Nightcall.” That song, of course, became hugely popular after being featured in the movie “Drive.” He was only 50, and his music definitely left a mark. It’s a loss for the electronic music scene and for fans of that iconic film.
According to reports from French newspaper Le Figaro and TV station BFM, musician Kavinsky, whose real name was Vincent Belorgey, passed away after what appeared to be a stroke. An investigation by Paris prosecutors found no evidence of foul play.
Kavinsky was a key figure in the Paris electronic music scene during the 2000s and 2010s. His music, characterized by bright synth sounds and a dark, moody feel, felt equally at home on the streets of Los Angeles and in the clubs of Montmartre.
Kavinsky became a key artist in the second wave of France’s electronic dance music scene by creating a playful, ironic image for himself: a producer who seemingly came back to life after a car crash involving a Ferrari.

French President Emmanuel Macron shared a post on Instagram honoring Kavinsky, saying France will always remember him as a talented artist.
