Doctor Who stars Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill reunite for brand-new adventure

Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill are returning as The Doctor and Yasmin Khan for a new Doctor Who story. In it, they’ll embark on a journey aboard an interstellar train.

Coming in September, the audio drama The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures: The Greatest Train Robbery finds the Doctor and her friend Yaz unexpectedly involved in a train heist, forcing them to travel by public transport instead of the TARDIS.

So, I’m playing as the Doctor, and we were on our way to this system called Maelin – it was supposed to be this perfect, peaceful place. But things went south fast. Our train got hijacked by rebels, and it quickly became clear that Maelin wasn’t the paradise everyone thought it was. Definitely not a relaxing trip!

Karissa Hamilton-Bannis, known for her work on shows like Hollyoaks, wrote The Greatest Train Robbery. This marks her first time writing for the Thirteenth Doctor Adventures series, and she expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to delve into the dynamic between the main characters.

I was thrilled to write stories featuring the Thirteenth Doctor and Yaz because I believed their relationship had a lot of untapped potential. I’m very thankful to Big Finish for giving me the chance to delve deeper into their dynamic.

What to Read Next

The writer explained their inspiration came from Ursula K. Le Guin’s short story ‘The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas,’ which has stayed with them since they first read it. That story itself was influenced by ideas from Dostoyevsky about utilitarianism, and the writer wanted to delve into those concepts further.

Hamilton-Bannis explained the dynamic between the Doctor and Yaz, noting that the Doctor usually concentrates on the overall situation, whereas Yaz reacts more personally and emotionally, focusing on how things affect individuals.

Jodie Whittaker is returning to play her character in a new audio series. She recently talked about potentially coming back to the main TV show, which is currently undergoing changes as the BBC seeks bids for its production.

She’s always been open about her deep love for Doctor Who, and has consistently said in interviews she’d jump at the chance to return. “It’s well known how I feel,” she explained. “I’ll always love Doctor Who.”

You can now pre-order The Greatest Train Robbery for just £9.99 as a digital download, or get the download plus a limited edition collector’s CD (only 1,500 copies available) for £13.99.

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK, with classic episodes available via BBC iPlayer.
