As a huge Star Trek fan, I was really disappointed to hear they’re tearing down the sets used for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. It makes the chances of that Strange New Worlds spin-off, Star Trek: Year One, happening seem even slimmer. Strange New Worlds – following Captain Pike and his crew – was such a breath of fresh air when it premiered in 2022, and it genuinely brought the franchise back to life. Thankfully, critics and fans loved it, and it did really well on Paramount+.
Even though Strange New Worlds has been popular, it will conclude after a shorter fifth season that’s already finished filming. When Paul Wesley joined the show as James T. Kirk, many viewers hoped for the series to continue, focusing on Kirk’s early time leading the Enterprise. With a strong existing cast, a continuation titled Star Trek: Year One seemed likely, but Paramount has decided to go in a different direction.
With No Strange New Worlds Sets, Year One Seems Unlikely
Recent reports indicate that both Starfleet Academy and Strange New Worlds are ending soon, despite having future seasons planned. Starfleet Academy will conclude after its second season, while Strange New Worlds will finish with a fourth season and a shorter fifth season, both of which have already been filmed.
Since the sets used for Star Trek: Year One could have also been used for Strange New Worlds, the fact that they were destroyed doesn’t look good for the potential spin-off series. While nothing is official yet, it’s strange to dismantle the sets if they were considering continuing Captain Kirk’s adventures aboard the Enterprise.
As a total sci-fi fan, I’m loving how Strange New Worlds is giving us fresh takes on classic characters – Uhura, played by Celia Rose Gooding, and Scotty with Martin Quinn are fantastic examples, and honestly, either one could carry their own show! Plus, Paramount just dropped a hint about someone new showing up in the Season 5 finale which has me seriously excited.
An announcement in December 2025 initially suggested we might get a spin-off show focusing on Year One. However, recent developments make that possibility seem less likely.
What’s Next For Star Trek On Paramount+?
As a huge Star Trek fan, it’s a little sad to see things winding down. With Strange New Worlds and the recently announced Starfleet Academy being the last two shows still in production, and now both canceled, the future of Trek on TV is really up in the air. It feels like we might be heading towards a return to movies, which could be great, but it definitely seems like an era of Star Trek on streaming is coming to a close.
Though not the first idea for a new Star Trek series, Star Trek: Year One followed quickly after strong fan interest in Star Trek: Legacy. Following the well-received third season of Star Trek: Picard, many viewers hoped for Star Trek: Legacy, envisioning the captain taking command of the Enterprise-G.
Although fans and cast members are still hoping for it, the spin-off series appears to be cancelled. The future of the Star Trek franchise is uncertain, and Star Trek: Year One doesn’t seem likely to happen at this point. Given the compelling new and reimagined characters introduced in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, it would be disappointing if Season 5 turned out to be the show’s last.
The world of Star Trek is vast enough to support many different types of stories. Let’s hope there are more projects planned that build on all the established elements and continue the franchise’s legacy.
