The first four Toy Story movies, plus the 2022 spin-off Lightyear, had already brought in $3.2 billion before the release of Toy Story 5. Now, Toy Story 5 itself has surpassed a billion dollars at the box office, bringing the franchise’s total to over $4.22 billion.
Toy Story 5 Is a True Hit
Toy Story 5 has become the highest-grossing film of the year, joining The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Michael in the billion-dollar club. The Super Mario Bros. Movie reached the milestone first in 2026, earning $1.011 billion, but was then surpassed by the Michael Jackson biopic, which made $1.015 billion. Now, Toy Story 5 has earned even more, becoming the top-grossing film overall.
Despite already earning over $3 billion this year, Disney’s Toy Story 5 has become their first film to reach $1 billion. However, the live-action remake of Moana hasn’t performed as well, bringing in $228.2 million globally on a $250 million budget. It did, though, outperform the 2025 release of Snow White, which earned $205.6 million with a budget of $270 million.
The film has become a box office hit, achieving a record-breaking opening for the series and setting new benchmarks for animated films releasing in 2026. Produced with a budget of $250 million, it’s quickly gaining on the earnings of previous installments like 2010’s Toy Story 3 ($1.066 billion) and 2019’s Toy Story 4 ($1.073 billion). These figures don’t account for inflation.
Christopher Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey, continues to be a huge success, topping box office charts both in the US and around the world. It earned an impressive $215.3 million during its second weekend, dropping only 18% from its opening. With a worldwide total of $639.6 million after just two weeks, and a production budget of $250 million, the film has already more than paid for itself and is expected to be very profitable for Universal.
Critics & Audiences Loved Toy Story 5
For over thirty years, this beloved series has consistently surprised and delighted both reviewers and fans – and the newest film is no exception. While focusing on Jessie’s journey, it also cleverly brought a fresh element into the mix: toys powered by technology.
I’m a little worried about Bonnie! She’s got this new tablet, Lilypad, and it’s really changing things. Woody, Buzz, Jessie – all her favorite toys – are having a hard time adjusting because Lilypad is trying to take over playtime. It makes you wonder if things will ever be the same for them, and honestly, I’m rooting for the toys to find a way to still be special!
Both sources highly praised the work, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 92% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating based on 315 reviews, and audiences on IMDb awarding it a ‘Verified Hot’ score of 94%.
