Tom Hiddleston’s “wondrous” real-life drama with Outlander’s Caitríona Balfe gets first look

Tom Hiddleston’s new film, Tenzing, a captivating drama, has released its first preview. The movie also features Caitríona Balfe, known for her role in Outlander, and will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September.

Inspired by a true story, Tenzing follows the life of Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa climber from Nepal and India, who famously reached the top of Mount Everest with Edmund Hillary.

With assistance from Jill Henderson, who managed logistics for expeditions, Tenzing persuaded Colonel John Hunt to include him on the British climbing team, recognizing his previous contributions. The film tells the story of his involvement in the famous 1953 British Mount Everest expedition.

Western climbers view Mount Everest as a challenge to overcome, but Tenzing sees Chomolungma – the same mountain – as a sacred goddess worthy of respect. The story explores not only the dangers of climbing Everest, but also the conflicts arising from differences in culture, social class, and personal goals among those attempting the ascent.

Watching them up there, so far removed from everything down below – all the power, status, and ambition just seemed to disappear. It was incredible to see how it brought these two men together, forging this amazing bond of respect and trust. And for Tenzing… well, you could tell it wasn’t just about reaching the summit. It felt like he’d been working towards this his whole life, not just as a climber, but on a much deeper, spiritual level.

Award-winning director Jennifer Peedom helms this film, which stars Genden Phuntsok in the main role and Tom Hiddleston as Edmund Hillary. A newly released image shows them looking tired but determined while navigating a treacherous, snow-covered terrain.

Honestly, after reading about Tenzing, I just feel like it’s a truly inspiring story – a real testament to achieving something amazing, and it’s clear that love and support played a huge part in making it happen.

The film features Thinley Lhamo as Tenzing’s wife, Dawa, alongside Balfe playing Jill Henderson and Willem Dafoe as John Hunt. It will be available to stream on Apple TV starting October 16th, after showing in select theaters.

TIFF has called the upcoming film about Tenzing Norgay “wondrous.” It will have its first Canadian screening at the festival between September 10th and 20th, though specific showtimes haven’t been released yet. While not officially confirmed, many expect the film to also premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado from September 4th to 7th, 2026.
