I was completely shocked this season when they told Juliette that Bernard died in the airlock fire! It turned out to be way more complicated than it seemed, though. We saw a flashback of him surviving the blaze, only to apparently get taken out by Sims soon after. But then, at the end of episode 4? Huge twist – Bernard’s actually alive and has been secretly hidden down in the Digger Void! It’s unbelievable.
In a recent interview with Radio Times, actor Jeffrey Wright discussed his surprising return to the show and the changes his character, Bernard, has undergone. He explained that Bernard isn’t just physically different now, but has also experienced a complete shift in his morals, mindset, and inner self. Wright hinted at a journey toward redemption for Bernard, but also suggested that the weight of his many secrets will create new challenges. Read his full comments below.
Season 3 allowed me to portray a very changed Bernard – not just physically, but deeply transformed as a person, both emotionally and spiritually.
He discovered everything he believed was true was actually false, and now he’s determined to right his past wrongs, improve his own life, help others, and repair the damage he’s done to his community. It’s a wonderfully complex role for an actor – a chance to explore such a powerful journey of redemption.
What makes this character so compelling is his hidden depth. He knows things others don’t, which gives him a unique influence, but also causes him great personal suffering.
Bernard living past the fire is a significant departure from Hugh Howey’s Silo novels. In the books, he dies in the fire and remains a villain, consistently oppressing the people of Silo 18. Juliette also never has the opportunity to talk to him after her experiences outside and in Silo 17. This change adds a twist to the show’s storyline.
The Apple TV series keeps Bernard alive after the fire, allowing him a path to make amends and reveal crucial information that impacts Juliette and Sims’ stories. Unlike the books, Juliette loses some of her memories when she returns to Silo 18. While those memories are slowly returning, Bernard can help her remember what she’s forgotten – and even share secrets she never knew in the first place.
Sims played a key role in both Bernard’s survival and keeping him secret – this was revealed in a clip from episode 5 shown at Comic-Con. He also seems to be changing for the better, seeking answers while helping Juliette regain her memories. Adding another layer of complexity, his wife, Camille Sims (played by Alexandria Riley), is now in charge of IT.
Discovering the horrifying Safeguard Procedure – the mass poisoning of an entire silo – shattered Bernard’s belief in the system he’d devoted his life to. But instead of giving up, he’s now determined to fight for a better future, making him a serious challenge to those in power outside of Silo 18. Alongside Juliette and Sims, he forms a powerful team capable of uncovering the truth and bringing about real change.
The changes from the book are so big that even fans who’ve read the source material don’t know how much longer Bernard will last. This makes the rest of Silo season 3 genuinely surprising for everyone watching, and it’s especially true if he manages to survive all the way into the show’s fourth and final season. However, if Camille or the Algorithm discover he’s still alive, his survival might be short-lived.
