After the big hit Barbie and the disappointing performance of Masters of the Universe, Mattel Films just dropped the trailer for their next film, Matchbox: The Movie.
This thrilling movie follows a tight-knit group of friends whose ordinary lives are turned upside down when Sean, a CIA agent from their past, suddenly reappears. He pulls them into a high-stakes, worldwide chase to prevent a global disaster.
The trailer is packed with over-the-top action, much like the Fast & Furious movies. Expect cars speeding through the desert, stolen nuclear weapons, villains endangering people from planes and helicopters, intense car chases in the city, a major highway scene, and a truck dramatically going airborne.
The connection to Matchbox isn’t obvious at first, but the trailer shows the team fondly remembers playing with the miniature cars as kids. That’s why Sean recruited them to stop the terrorists.
The film also briefly shows children today playing with their Matchbox cars amidst the unfolding events, adding a touch of normalcy to the scene.

John Cena stars in the film, alongside Jessica Biel who returns to acting after a five-year break. The cast also includes Arturo Castro from Broad City, Sam Richardson of Veep, Teyonah Parris known for her work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Corey Stoll, Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani (from Body of Lies), and Bill Camp (The Queen’s Gambit).
While films like Barbie and Masters of the Universe are playing in theaters, Matchbox: The Movie will be released directly on Apple TV in early October.
Meanwhile, John Cena will soon be seen on the big screen in the Looney Tunes film Coyote vs Acme.
As a huge fan, I’m so thrilled about this release! It’s amazing to think this movie was actually finished three years ago, then shelved by Warner Bros., only to be rescued and given another chance. It’s a real comeback story, and I can’t wait to finally see it!
Matchbox: The Movie will be released on Apple TV on 9 October.
