A week after it first launched, the Apple TV+ crime thriller starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Timothy Olyphant remains the most popular show on the platform in the United States, according to data from FlixPatrol.
Apple TV has become known for popular shows like Severance, Ted Lasso, Silo, and Widow’s Bay. Their newest series is also a big hit, topping charts in countries around the world, including Australia, Canada, and the UK. The first two episodes launched on July 15th, followed by the third on July 22nd. Four more episodes are still to come, releasing every Wednesday through August 19th.
Lucky Is Based On a Book
Lucky is based on Marissa Stapley’s 2021 novel of the same title. Both the book and the TV series center around Luciana “Lucky” Armstrong (played by Taylor-Joy), a skilled con artist following in her father’s footsteps. Hoping to escape this life, Lucky plans a final, large-scale con that promises a huge payout. However, when the plan fails and her husband vanishes, Lucky finds herself on the run.
Lucky is desperately searching for answers after her husband disappears – was he taken against his will, or did he leave on his own? Her quest for the truth puts her on the run from both the FBI and Priscilla Masterson, a ruthless crime boss who also happens to be her mother-in-law. Along the way, Lucky reconnects with her incarcerated father, John, who tries to guide her through phone calls from prison, offering advice to help her stay safe.
As someone who loves seeing books turned into movies, I always have mixed feelings about changes. In this case, with the Apple TV+ adaptation, they really streamlined things. The book kicks off with Lucky winning the lottery, and a huge part of the story is how she tries to claim the prize while avoiding trouble with the law – it’s a clever setup! But the show? They dropped that whole plotline. Instead, the series jumps right into a fast-paced chase, focusing on Lucky running from both the cops and the bad guys who want what she has. It’s definitely a different approach.
Stapley’s book gained international success after being selected for Reese’s Book Club in December 2021. Reese Witherspoon is now also an executive producer for the television series based on the novel.
Lucky’s Star-Studded Cast Carries the Series
The film has received generally favorable reviews from critics, earning a 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Even those with mixed feelings often praise the performances – the cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Timothy Olyphant, and Annette Bening, all incredibly talented actors.
Despite some problems with the series, Doll acknowledges strong performances from the lead actresses. She describes it as a predictable crime story but highlights Anya Taylor-Joy and Annette Bening as standouts, praising their ability to bring depth and humanity to their complex characters, especially during scenes together.
