Galaxy Digital has launched a new grant program called the Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative. The company is encouraging other organizations to help fund and conduct research, speeding up the process of making Bitcoin secure against future quantum computers through teamwork.

This effort is happening as governments, tech firms, and scientists get ready for the future of quantum computing. While experts don’t believe today’s computers pose an immediate risk to Bitcoin’s security, preparation is still crucial.

This program will provide funding to develop infrastructure that prepares the Bitcoin ecosystem for the potential threat of quantum computers, which could one day compromise current security systems. Galaxy Digital is initially focusing on researching new ways to digitally sign transactions, developing methods for users to safely move their Bitcoin, and conducting thorough security audits.

Research from CryptoQuant, as highlighted by Galaxy, suggests that around 6.9 million Bitcoin – currently worth approximately $461 billion – could be at risk if quantum computers become powerful enough to break Bitcoin’s security. This is because existing security measures protecting Bitcoin could be compromised by these advanced computers.

Even though fully functional quantum computers are still likely years off, experts say we need to start preparing now. Galaxy argues that adding quantum-resistant security to Bitcoin would be a long process involving many different groups – developers, wallet creators, exchanges, and users – so research needs to begin immediately.

Preparing Bitcoin before the technology arrives

Bitcoin is currently protected by strong encryption that regular computers would take far too long to crack. But a new type of computing called quantum computing works differently and could potentially solve those same complex problems much faster in the future.

Although quantum computers powerful enough to break Bitcoin’s security aren’t available yet, governments are investing more in developing both the technology to build them and ways to protect against them.

President Trump recently took steps to boost quantum computing in the U.S., ordering government agencies to speed up its development and improve defenses against potential hacking using this technology. At the same time, the Commerce Department committed over $2 billion to nine companies building advanced quantum computers – machines that could one day threaten the security of cryptocurrencies and the internet.

As an investor, I see Galaxy’s move as really smart. They’re proactively helping developers tackle the real-world problems of moving to new technologies *before* those technologies are even fully ready. It’s about getting a head start and making the transition smoother for everyone.

The company wants others to get involved – not just by providing money, but also through sharing their skills and resources – to help build and improve open-source projects. They’re hoping universities, businesses, and other groups will join in offering both technical know-how and financial assistance.

Experts working on Bitcoin are still discussing the best way to upgrade its security to protect against future quantum computers. Galaxy Digital notes this update will be much harder than past improvements like Taproot. It will need careful coordination and widespread changes across almost all parts of the Bitcoin network.

Galaxy expands another part of its crypto business

As a researcher following Galaxy, I’ve observed they’re continuing to grow their digital asset business, and this new project represents another step in that expansion throughout 2026.

Galaxy Digital received approval from New York regulators in May to operate as a digital asset business within the state. Its division, GalaxyOne Prime NY, was granted licenses allowing it to offer secure trading and storage of cryptocurrencies to institutional investors like hedge funds, financial advisors, and family offices. The platform currently manages around $9 billion in assets for these clients.

Mike Novogratz, founder and CEO, explained that New York’s large concentration of institutional money makes this regulatory approval a key step for Galaxy as it grows its business with these important investors.

Earlier this year, Galaxy revealed plans for a $100 million investment fund focused on cryptocurrency tokens. The fund will also invest in financial companies likely to grow with the increasing use of digital assets and changes in regulations. Reports indicate that before it even launched, the fund secured investments from family offices, high-net-worth individuals, and institutions, alongside initial funding directly from Galaxy.

Beyond its traditional financial services, Galaxy is growing its involvement in digital infrastructure. Recently, the company reached a 15-year deal to brand Texas Tech University’s football stadium as Galaxy Stadium, starting in 2026. This partnership also designates Galaxy as the university’s official provider of digital asset and data center services. It complements Galaxy’s existing Helios data center in West Texas, which is designed to support up to 1.6 gigawatts of power for artificial intelligence and advanced computing.
