Dormant Ethereum Wallet Awakens After 11 Years

Dormant Ethereum Wallet Awakens After 11 Years

An Ethereum wallet that hasn’t been used since the very beginning of Ethereum has unexpectedly become active again after over ten years.

As a researcher tracking blockchain activity, I noticed something interesting today. Whale Alert flagged a previously inactive Ethereum address – one that’s been holding 2,000 ETH since the very beginning – that suddenly became active after being dormant for eleven years. Based on current prices, that address holds roughly $3.79 million worth of Ethereum.

The stash was worth just $620 when the wallet was first funded in 2015.

Other recent activations

The latest activation follows a string of similar events involving early Ethereum addresses.

A digital wallet containing 10,000 Ethereum (valued at almost $22.9 million) became active again in late April after being inactive for over 10 years.

As a crypto investor, it was pretty interesting to see some old Ethereum wallets suddenly become active again in May. We’re talking about wallets that haven’t moved funds since the very beginning of Ethereum! Specifically, I noticed activity in wallets holding significant amounts – 2,000 ETH, 790 ETH, and 400 ETH – which had been completely dormant for years. It definitely made me wonder what was going on and why those early holders were moving their coins now.

As part of my research, I noticed something interesting earlier this year. Whale Alert flagged a couple of older wallets – ones that hadn’t been used in over ten years – suddenly becoming active. In March, one wallet moved 401 ETH, and in February, another moved 99 ETH. These appear to be ‘pre-mine’ wallets, meaning they held cryptocurrency from the very beginning.

For the first time in weeks, an Ethereum wallet that was created long ago and hadn’t been used has become active. No such activity was seen in June, making this recent event in July noteworthy.

Ethereum isn’t the only cryptocurrency seeing old activity. Earlier this year, Whale Alert noticed two very old Bitcoin wallets suddenly become active after being dormant for over 12 and 13 years – one held 2,100 BTC and the other 500 BTC.

Bitmine continues accumulation

In the meantime, institutional buyers continue accumulating the asset.

Bitmine recently bought 7,430 Ethereum, bringing their total amount held to 5.78 million, as reported by Onchain Lens.

The company currently holds around $10.9 billion worth of Ethereum in staking, representing 4.91 million ETH. Their total digital assets, including cryptocurrency, cash, and other investments, are valued at approximately $11.5 billion.

At the time of writing, Ethereum is trading at approximately $1,900 per ETH.
