Benny Safdie, who appears in The Odyssey, described a particularly wild scene from filming and shared his amazement at the grand scope of Christopher Nolan’s new film.
This movie is based on Homer’s classic story about Odysseus – played by Matt Damon – and his long journey back home after the Trojan War, where he hopes to be reunited with his wife, Penelope (played by Anne Hathaway).
The artwork features moments from the story of the Trojan War, including a portrayal of Agamemnon by Safdie. Agamemnon was the powerful Greek king who led the forces fighting in the war.
In an interview with Digital Spy, Safdie described a memorable scene from the film where the army enters Troy. He explained that he was put in the armor, and when the doors opened, he was surprised to see a thousand people behind him, all dressed in costume and carrying weapons.
I remember when Matt Damon and the rest of the team kicked down that door – it was chaos! Fire everywhere, everything felt so real and intense. I instantly thought, ‘Wow, this is going to be epic.’ Being in that scene really put you right there with them; it just felt huge.

This isn’t the first collaboration between Safdie and Nolan; Safdie appeared as Edward Teller in Nolan’s 2023 film, Oppenheimer. He was thrilled to have another opportunity to work with the director.
Safdie said they really enjoyed the last experience, despite it being challenging. They especially remembered the small moments in between bigger events, describing it as a powerful and rewarding time that pushed them creatively.
This role also had a physical component, and I wasn’t sure I’d be the obvious choice. But Nolan believed in me, so I decided to give it my all.
Despite only coming out in theaters on Friday, Nolan’s The Odyssey is already looking like a major success. It earned an impressive $264 million globally during its opening weekend, marking a new record for the director.
The film has received widespread critical praise, boasting a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 385 reviews. Currently, it’s the best-reviewed movie Christopher Nolan has ever made, surpassing both Memento and The Dark Knight, which each hold a 94% rating.
