D&D Beyond offers some fantastic adventure books for Dungeons & Dragons. While most content comes from Wizards of the Coast, the platform also features excellent player-created (D&D) settings released through partnerships. It’s easy to miss these adventures, as they often receive less attention than official releases.
I’m so excited about the new Dungeons & Dragons content that just dropped in June! It’s totally inspired by Bloodborne, letting us play through a really dark and gothic world. They’ve added cool new character options – unique classes, races, and even weapons that change shape, just like in those challenging FromSoftware games. And you know what? There are already some amazing official D&D adventures out there that I think deserve more love, like Curse of Strahd, Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus, and Vecna: Eve of Ruin. They’re fantastic!
Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass
As a huge fan of immersive worlds, I have to tell you about Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass on D&D Beyond. It’s created by 1985 Games and it’s fantastic – designed for characters levels 1 through 10! What really grabbed me is how much it feels like a blend of The Legend of Zelda and those beautiful Studio Ghibli films. If you want a fantasy setting with a lighthearted take on magic, something different than the usual fey stuff, then honestly, Obojima is just perfect. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for!
Beyond offering a wide range of characters, Obojima provides players and Dungeon Masters with a richly detailed magical world full of roleplaying potential and unique combat scenarios. Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass works with D&D 5th Edition, and can also be used with the newer 5.5e rules.
Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden
If you enjoy darker storylines, Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden is an excellent option. Published by Wizards of the Coast, this official adventure takes players on a compelling journey through a bleak and frozen corner of the Forgotten Realms. Though perhaps not as well-known as Curse of Strahd, it’s a full adventure for characters levels 1 through 12, set in a region where the sun hasn’t risen for two years due to the actions of the winter god.
In Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, a D&D adventure, players must uncover the source of a growing crisis in the frozen north. They’ll face not only a dangerous environment, but also the terrifying creatures that call Icewind Dale home. The game strongly encourages roleplaying, with each player receiving a secret backstory element at the start that will unfold throughout the campaign.
Dungeons of Drakkenheim
As a total fantasy nerd, I’ve been checking out Dungeons of Drakkenheim, and it’s really cool. It’s a dark fantasy world built by the Dungeon Dudes and Ghostfire Gaming, designed for 5e. What I love is that the adventure takes you from levels 1 to 13, all within this awesome city called Drakkenheim. It’s basically a sandbox, so you and your friends have tons of freedom to explore and figure out what happened to the place after some seriously bad stuff went down. It’s all about uncovering the city’s secrets, and you can go pretty much wherever you want!
In Dungeons of Drakkenheim, players can interact with different groups within the city, and their choices will shape how things unfold. If you enjoy spooky stories and cosmic horror, this is an excellent setting for your game! The adventures here are well-suited for both seasoned D&D players and Dungeon Masters, and many consider it one of the best options available on D&D Beyond.
The Wild Beyond the Witchlight
Wizards of the Coast has released another fantastic adventure, The Wild Beyond The Witchlight. This adventure takes characters from levels 1 to 8 and blends the playful atmosphere of a circus with a unique and intriguing take on the Feywild. It’s a particularly well-designed adventure, making it a great option for Dungeon Masters who are new to running games, and it’s perfect if you’re looking for a Dungeons & Dragons campaign that doesn’t focus heavily on combat.
Dealing with the fey often involves clever talking and negotiation. This adventure is great for roleplaying, with memorable characters – even some familiar faces! It’s easily one of my top picks for 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons, blending a straightforward storyline with opportunities for exploration and freedom, like smaller, self-contained areas within the larger campaign.
Tales from the Shadows
Published by Kobold Press, Tales from the Shadows is highly regarded as one of the best adventure books available on D&D Beyond. Similar to The Wild Beyond the Witchlight, it’s designed for characters starting at level 1 and progressing up to level 8. The adventure incorporates fey elements, creating a lighthearted and magical experience. It includes fourteen separate adventures that can be linked together to form a larger campaign.
If you enjoy Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition but want a game with a unique atmosphere, Tales from the Shadows is an excellent choice. It’s a fully-equipped game featuring lots of mysteries and maps, making it well worth checking out.
Waterdeep: Dragon Heist
If you’re looking for an adventure, consider Waterdeep: Dragon Heist. Despite the title suggesting a simple robbery, it’s actually a story focused on political secrets and solving a murder. The game is set in Waterdeep, a major city filled with powerful groups all vying for control.
This adventure is perfect for players and Dungeon Masters who enjoy stories centered in a city, rather than sprawling, open-world crises. Waterdeep: Dragon Heist is widely considered one of the strongest adventure modules available for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.
Humblewood Campaign Setting
The Humblewood Campaign Setting on D&D Beyond offers a charming adventure for players levels 1-5, taking place in the world of Everden. The story unfolds in the forest of Humblewood, where a group of animal-like heroes must work together to protect their home.
The game offers exciting new character choices, like unique classes and races, all designed to match the world of Humblewood. Players will work together to restore their homes, build relationships with the forest’s people, and investigate the cause of the devastating fires threatening Humblewood.
Call of the Netherdeep
Call of the Netherdeep, created by Critical Role, is widely considered a top-tier adventure module for the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons – and with good reason. This adventure guides players from levels 3 to 12 in the world of Exandria, which fans will recognize as the setting for both The Legend of Vox Machina and Mighty Nein TV series. These shows are based on the original campaigns Matt Mercer created.
This campaign is set in several famous places throughout Exandria, and includes a unique underwater segment – something you don’t often see in Dungeons & Dragons games. Throughout the story, the player characters will frequently interact with a group of non-player characters, and it’s up to the players to decide whether those NPCs will be allies, rivals, or outright villains, creating exciting opportunities for roleplaying.
The Crooked Moon
The Crooked Moon is a great adventure for players levels 1-13 who enjoy folk horror. It’s a particularly good choice if you found Ravenloft: The Horrors Within lacking in that specific type of scare. This campaign is designed to be consistently creepy and unsettling. It also includes a unique system called Fateweaving, which cleverly integrates players’ character histories into the story.
On D&D Beyond, The Crooked Moon is available in two sections. The first focuses on character creation, offering a wide range of races, classes, backgrounds, skills, and spells, along with information about the world it takes place in. The second section includes a collection of monsters and details for running the adventure. You can also buy both parts together as a bundle.
Grim Hollow
The Grim Hollow: Campaign Guide is a fantastic resource available on D&D Beyond. It’s perfect for players who want to experience an intense, dark fantasy setting. While it includes some quick adventures, it’s designed to help you create full-length campaigns suitable for characters of any level. Grim Hollow boasts unique locations and a world steeped in darkness, haunted by the loss of its gods and terrifying cosmic entities.
The popular tabletop role-playing setting Grim Hollow is now updated for the 5.5 edition ruleset, letting players and Dungeon Masters experience its dark fantasy world with the latest mechanics. Published by Ghostfire Gaming, it’s a fan-favorite choice for Dungeons & Dragons campaigns.
