Actress Nicola Walker recently discussed the challenges of raising children, just before her new funny series, Alice and Steve, is released. She stars in the Hulu show with Jemaine Clement and Yali Topol Margalith. Walker is well-known for her role in Unforgotten.
The story explores the growing tension in the friendship between Alice and Steve after Steve starts a romantic relationship with Alice’s daughter, Izzy.
I was chatting with Digital Spy before the show came out on June 8th, and the actress who plays my favorite character, Walker, talked about what her character was feeling and how she’d probably act if she was in the same situation. It really gave me some insight into what to expect!

She explained that the situation felt particularly difficult because it involved both her friend’s daughter and a deep sense of betrayal from someone she trusted. It was a really tough combination of problems.
This six-episode show centers on Alice and Steve, whose lifelong friendship of over twenty-five years dramatically falls apart in a funny, chaotic fight involving family, romance, and getting even.

Looking back on the experience, Walker stated she’d likely react the same way if she were in that situation again.
Honestly, as a parent, I always wished someone had just sat me down and firmly said, ‘You need to let them go and live their own life.’ It’s so tough when your kid reaches a certain age – in this case, 26 – and you realize you have to step back, even if it’s hard to do and you don’t agree with everything they’re doing. It’s about letting them make their own choices, and keeping quiet is the hardest part!
Walker shared that certain scenes felt deeply personal and emotionally challenging to film, as they resonated with her own life experiences.

I connected with the parts of the character where Alice loses control, because I experience that in my own life. It’s rare to see female characters portrayed that way, but I still understood her emotions. Playing those scenes was really enjoyable and freeing.
She isn’t worried about what others think of her. Her only priority is her daughter, and she’s completely focused on that.
Alice and Steve premieres on Hulu on June 8.
