Although Keith Haring is strongly associated with New York City, a new exhibit at 60 White highlights his worldwide influence, showing how his art reached far beyond Manhattan.
Currently showing in Tribeca, Keith Haring: A World in Motion was organized by Carlo McCormick and Lio Malca of Sixty White. The exhibition, spread across several floors, features Haring’s art created in cities around the world – New York, Tokyo, Paris, Milan, and San Francisco – and demonstrates how he adapted his signature style while staying connected to local communities.
The exhibition features notable pieces like works from the 1985 New York–Tokyo Sister Cities project, an ink drawing created in a Paris subway station in 1984, and a five-part mural painted in San Francisco in 1986. These works demonstrate the artist’s constant travel and their practice of using public areas for art and to spark dialogue.
The exhibition’s main attraction is a complete replica of San Francisco’s famous DV8 nightclub. This display highlights Haring’s consistent desire to blend art with everyday experiences. He intentionally placed his work in public spaces – like subways, clubs, and streets – to connect with people in their daily lives.
“Haring did not simply travel the world — he entered into dialogue with it,” McCormick said.
