The upcoming prequel Bosch: Start of Watch gets high praise from author Michael Connelly.
Although Bosch: Legacy finished its run last year, fans of the character still have plenty to look forward to. Titus Welliver will return as Bosch in the new Prime Video series Ballard, and another actor will play a young Bosch in a prequel set in the 1990s, airing on MGM+.
Michael Connelly recently spoke with Books on the Beach about the upcoming Bosch: Start of Watch series. He discussed the Amazon MGM Studios production, which is currently being filmed, and explained his level of involvement in the writing process. He emphasized that Bosch: Start of Watch features an original story not based on any of his previously published novels.
Connelly, an executive producer for the MGM+ Original series, commends Cameron Monaghan—known for his roles in Shameless and Gotham—for taking on the lead role. He notes that Monaghan bears a striking resemblance to a young Titus Welliver. Here’s what he had to say:
We’re making a show called Bosch: Start of Watch that tells the story of Harry Bosch as a new police officer during his first year on the job, set in 1992. It’s a prequel to the Bosch TV series, and different from the novels. 1992 was a really turbulent time in Los Angeles, which creates a lot of drama for someone just starting out as a cop. Production is going great – I saw the first episode last night and thought it was fantastic, I was really impressed.
I haven’t done any scriptwriting, but I did help with casting. We found an actor, Cameron Monaghan, who remarkably resembles Titus Welliver when he was younger. He’s very talented, and we put him alongside an experienced officer. This is a fresh take on the Bosch story, not adapted from any of the books. I’ve never explored Bosch as a rookie before – there have been brief glimpses of his past in flashbacks, but this version is a completely new creation developed by the writing team.
This new story takes place in Los Angeles in the early 1990s, following a young Harry Bosch during his first year on the police force. As the author notes, the timeline coincides with the infamous 1991 incident involving Rodney King and the LAPD, an event that sparked widespread outrage and had lasting consequences.
The new series, Bosch: Start of Watch, explores a Los Angeles struggling with racial tensions, gang problems, and internal conflicts within the police department. At the same time, detective Harry Bosch finds himself investigating a large-scale robbery, which will challenge his dedication to his new role and define his career path.
While a release date hasn’t been announced yet, casting for the new series Bosch: Start of Watch on MGM+ is underway. Omari Hardwick, known for Power, will star as Eli Bridges, who mentors Bosch. Ariana Guerra (from Netflix’s Nemesis) will play Rosa, a new officer who may become a love interest, and JD Pardo, previously on Mayans MC, will play Cory, Harry’s adopted brother and a professional thief.
Azita Ghanizada, Kathleen Wilhoite, William Fichtner, Seamus Dever, Raphael Sbarge, Marco Rodriguez, Rafi Gavron, and Ryan McPartlin also appear in the prequel series, which Timothy Welliver has praised. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Welliver shared that he’s been talking with Titus Makarov and is excited about Bosch: Start of Watch.
