Tom Holland Teases R-Rated Spider-Man Movie After Peter Parker’s Punisher Team-Up

A darker Spider-Man story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be in the web-slinger’s future.

In a recent interview with Empire, Tom Holland expressed his enthusiasm about Jon Bernthal’s appearance as the Punisher in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and said he’s eager to work with the character again. Holland suggested he’d love to appear in one of the Punisher’s shows, joking about how interesting an R-rated Spider-Man might be. He also shared his gratitude for Bernthal’s involvement in the film and his desire to return the favor.

Jon Bernthal recently reprised his role as The Punisher in the Disney+ special, The Punisher: One Last Kill, and spoke with Empire about his connection to the character and his history with Tom Holland. Bernthal admitted he wasn’t very familiar with The Punisher before taking on the role, and it was Holland who first introduced him to the comic book character and explained what made him so compelling. The two actors have remained friends ever since, and Bernthal expressed his excitement about filming back-to-back movies with Holland – The Odyssey and Spider-Man. He shared his admiration and pride for Holland’s success.

For years, the Punisher has only appeared in Marvel TV shows, but now he’s joining the big-screen Marvel Cinematic Universe. This news follows closely after Charlie Cox made a brief appearance as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home five years ago.

Tom Holland is eager to have Spider-Man appear in Marvel’s TV shows, but there’s a significant hurdle. Although Sony and Marvel Studios are working together on Spider-Man movies, their agreement doesn’t extend to television series.

The reason Spider-Man hasn’t been explicitly mentioned in the Daredevil: Born Again series comes down to the rights to his story. While the show can hint at the famous hero, they need Sony’s permission before they can actually name him or include him in the show.

The next trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day should hopefully show more of the relationship between Peter and Frank, since this will be the first time we see them interact on screen in a live-action movie. If audiences like their team-up, Marvel and Sony might be able to agree on a deal that would let Tom Holland appear in Disney+ shows as well.

If Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher don’t appear in regular Marvel TV shows, Sony and Marvel could team them up for a special presentation within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This kind of limited-series project would probably be simpler to arrange than having Spider-Man make several appearances on a full show.

Following the Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will turn its attention to the next Avengers films, currently planned as Doomsday and Secret Wars. It’s currently unknown whether Tom Holland will appear in either of these movies.

But the main question now is what’s next for Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after this current storyline about the multiverse wraps up. It’s highly probable that Marvel is already planning a fifth Spider-Man movie, particularly if the recent film, Brand New Day, does well at the box office.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to open in theaters on July 31.
