Summary

  • Iittala is set to debut a seven-meter architectural pavilion at Copenhagen’s 3daysofdesign
  • Built from low-carbon Hydro aluminum, the structure replicates Alvar Aalto’s iconic vase
  • The walk-in landmark houses the new Aalto City Vase collection, inspired by six global cities

I’m so excited for 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen! Iittala is creating something amazing – the Aalto 90 Pavilion. It’s a huge, seven-meter-high installation that basically turns Alvar Aalto’s famous vase into a building you can actually walk inside! They’re building it right on the harborfront at Ofelia Plads, and the idea of stepping into that iconic shape, but on a massive scale, is just incredible. I can’t wait to see it!

Created by TABLEAU CPH and built with low-carbon aluminum from Hydro, this structure blends Scandinavian design with modern architectural ideas and innovative materials. The pavilion utilizes aluminum created entirely with renewable energy, cut and joined to create flowing, organic curves that appear light and airy, even at a large scale. Designed with sustainability in mind, the structure can be easily taken apart, recycled, or moved to different locations in the future.

Iittala unveiled its new Aalto City Vase collection at the pavilion, with each vase designed to capture the spirit of a different city – Berlin, Amsterdam, Tokyo, New York, Helsinki, and Copenhagen. The vases reimagine the iconic, flowing shape of the Aalto vase using unique colors and moods, creating a connection between the object and its surroundings. The pavilion itself served as both a display area and a container, showcasing the vases as architectural elements while also highlighting their beauty as collectible pieces, demonstrating their lasting appeal to people of all cultures and ages.
