Traitors’ Joe Marler helps Soccer Aid raise record-breaking £16 million as England win annual charity match

Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of Soccer Aid, the popular charity football match co-founded by Robbie Williams. The game, held at the London Stadium, saw England play against the World XI, with both teams made up of famous faces from sports, film, music, and television.

The game brought in more than £16 million – a new record for the charity – and all the funds will go to UNICEF to support children globally.

England beat the World XI team 3-2 in a thrilling match. Jermain Defoe and Damson Idris, making his first appearance in the Soccer Aid event, both scored goals. Rugby star Joe Marler, known for his appearances on Celebrity Traitors, also impressed with some dramatic saves while playing goalkeeper. With this victory, England has now won seven times, compared to eight wins for the World XI team.

I was one of over 60,000 people at London Stadium for the match – the atmosphere was incredible! If you couldn’t make it, though, you could catch it live on ITV and STV, which started broadcasting around 5pm.

Okay, so Tom Hanks and Tim Allen showed up to deliver the match ball, but it was kinda awkward. They seriously acted like they didn’t realize the cameras were rolling! It was a funny moment, but definitely a bit of a live TV blunder.

Before the game started, Woody and Buzz Lightyear—the characters from Toy Story—were interviewed by GK Barry. When asked about their plans, Allen playfully responded that they were complaining about penalty shoot-outs.

Even though it was a high-profile event, people were surprised to see the American duo participate. Some found their confusion entertaining, and others were shocked by Allen’s accidental swearing before the designated time for such language on television.

Fans on social media were delighted to see Tom Hanks and Tim Allen at Soccer Aid. One person wrote they were still excited about it, while another expressed their surprise at seeing goalkeeper Barry interview Tom Hanks, something they never expected, especially in 2026.

One viewer wondered if Tim Allen seemed confused, while another commented that both Tim Allen and Tom Hanks at Soccer Aid clearly didn’t recognize anyone, which they found amusing.

One viewer described the situation as feeling like a strange dream, expressing confusion over the appearance of Tom Hanks, Gary Barry, and Tim Allen together. They simply asked, “What is happening?”

Fans reacted to a clip of Tim Allen playfully calling Tom Hiddleston ‘Tommy,’ with some finding it amusing and others joking about Allen’s blunt language and suggesting the pair might have been drinking.

Soccer Aid can be streamed on ITVX and STV Player. Toy Story 5 releases in cinemas on 19 June.
