Alexa Demie has shared that she worried about being replaced in Euphoria if she didn’t agree to filming nude scenes and scenes with difficult sexual content.
The 35-year-old actress has been playing the character Maddy Perez since the start of the popular HBO series, which debuted in 2019, and has appeared in all three seasons.
The newest season of the show has upset some viewers with its strange and shocking scenes, featuring both excessive nudity and graphic violence.
Now, Alexa has shared her thoughts on shooting nude scenes.
The actress told The Hollywood Reporter she worried refusing to film sex scenes would cost her the role.
‘Not because anyone ever said that to me, but because I was so young and I didn’t know.’
She shared that during filming, she felt uneasy while portraying Maddy’s infidelity with Nate Jacobs (played by Jacob Elordi). She explained that after filming the scene, she immediately recognized she wasn’t comfortable with it.
Alexa said she spoke with the production crew after the incident, and they were understanding, so it didn’t happen again.
This follows warnings that Sydney Sweeney, her co-star, might jeopardize her career by continuing to film sexually explicit scenes.
Industry experts worry that the 28-year-old star of Euphoria might be limited to playing overly sexualized roles, potentially defining her career and public image.
In the upcoming third season of HBO’s Euphoria, Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, explores creating content on OnlyFans. Some scenes, including those where she dresses as a baby and a cat, have sparked debate among viewers.
Dave Quast, an expert in crisis and reputation management, told Fox News that the show Euphoria played a key role in launching Sydney Sweeney’s career by showcasing her willingness to take on challenging and emotionally demanding roles.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen this happen time and time again: when the focus shifts to someone’s image rather than their actual talent or work, it can really limit what they’re known for. What initially felt bold and exciting can ironically end up boxing them in, making it harder for people to appreciate the full scope of their abilities.
I’ve always believed that showing intimacy or sexuality in movies and TV isn’t automatically shallow or unimportant. What does bother me is when that becomes the only thing people focus on when talking about an actor – when it overshadows their talent and everything else they bring to a role. It’s frustrating to see someone reduced to just that one aspect of their work.
Sweeney’s difficulty isn’t about having played suggestive characters. It’s about ensuring those roles feel like deliberate choices made by the character, rather than defining her public image completely.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following Sydney’s career, and last year she really turned heads with her role in ‘The Housemaid.’ It was a pretty intense psychological thriller, and let’s just say her scenes with Brandon Sklenar were definitely steamy and pushed some boundaries. It was a bold move that really got people talking!
Last month, creator Sam was called out for the ‘unnecessary use’ of Nazi symbols in the show.
Viewers, particularly those who enjoyed the show’s earlier, more intricate and realistic storylines, also expressed disapproval of scenes featuring Sydney’s character with nudity and foot fetishism.
But the sixth episode of season three showed that the show’s creator, Sam, continued to aim for shocking and scandalous content, even pushing boundaries further with disturbing material.
A particularly unsettling moment in the show involves Faye Valentine (Chloe Cherry) receiving a swastika tattoo on her lower back from her drug dealer, Wayne (Toby Wallace), who is portrayed as a white supremacist and has a Nazi symbol tattooed on his arm.
The show’s creator, Sam, has faced backlash from viewers regarding the inclusion of Nazi imagery, which many felt was unnecessary and inappropriate. Concerns were also raised about a previous episode that depicted a sexually explicit scene involving characters Faye and Wayne with a Nazi flag visible in the background.
Viewers have been particularly shocked by how explicit some of the scenes with Sydney’s character, Cassie, have become.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen content creators explore a wide range of personas and expressions. In Cassie’s case, she’s created content for her OnlyFans platform where she’s experimented with different looks, including what’s been described as an ‘adult baby’ aesthetic, and also shared fully nude scenes. It really highlights how creators are using the platform to express themselves and connect with their audience in very personal ways.
Viewers reacted negatively to scenes where Cassie participated in ‘puppy play,’ dressing in revealing dog-themed lingerie. This caused Sam to have to explain and justify the controversial content.
Sam explained to The Hollywood Reporter that while Cassie’s dog-themed look is funny on its own—with her ‘dog house,’ ‘dog ears,’ and nose—the real humor comes from the fact that her housekeeper is the one recording it.
We always aimed to add another level of humor and unexpectedness, preventing the story from getting lost in the character’s imagination. The joke was to surprise the audience, to shatter the illusion and remind them it wasn’t real.
Sydney recently shared with Entertainment Tonight that Cassie is a really unpredictable character this season. She’s incredibly determined to become famous and makes some surprisingly bold decisions to achieve that goal.
Sam has previously explained his use of explicit content, stating at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival that we live in a highly sexualized society and pornography significantly impacts young people’s minds.
