Paris Hilton reminisces about her successful audition for Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Paris Hilton became famous as a reality TV star on The Simple Life, alongside her friend Nicole Richie. She also appeared in several scripted TV shows and movies, including episodes of Supernatural and The O.C., and a role in the 2005 horror film House of Wax.
Hilton took on a unique role in the gothic rock opera Repo! The Genetic Opera, appearing with actors like Anthony Stewart Head, known from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, along with Alexa Vega and Sarah Brightman.
In a recent interview with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant, actress Megan Hilton and director Darren Lynn Bousman talked about Hilton’s role and her successful audition. They shared details about the character of Amber – her complexities and how well Hilton understood the part, noting that she had memorized all her lines and was incredibly prepared.
ScreenRant asked Paris how she reflects on her role as Amber, noting it was a significant change for her at the time. They pointed out that many now see Amber as a groundbreaking character and asked if Paris has a different perspective on the role now, or if she thinks audiences’ understanding of Amber has changed over time.
Hilton talked about how different the character was from what she was typically known for playing.
Paris Hilton explained that things were very different back then. People were used to her signature look – blonde hair, a tiny dog, and lots of pink clothing.
She then talked about the character Amber, explaining how she developed Amber’s appearance based on her own understanding of the role. She shared details about Amber’s history and personal life, and highlighted the character’s strength.
Amber was a really fascinating character – she seemed completely different in every scene because of the makeup and hairstyles. Looking back, I see her as a girl who craved her father’s attention and was trying to change herself to fill an emotional void. Plus, her brothers were incredibly chaotic, creating a really dysfunctional family dynamic. Despite all that, she was also incredibly resilient and strong.
Hilton added that she loves to surprise people. She was quite nervous going into the audition, but she prepared thoroughly, memorizing her lines and choosing an appropriate outfit.
I really enjoy the feeling of surprising people. I’ll never forget going to the audition – I was incredibly nervous walking into the room with Darren and everyone else. But I was prepared; I knew all my lines perfectly. I even dressed completely as the character! I just felt so proud and thrilled when they told me I got the part.
Bousman thought back to Hilton’s audition, noting he hadn’t known her before. He explained that while many actresses tried out for the role of Amber, Hilton stood out because of her thorough preparation and enthusiastic performance, ultimately winning her the part.
I have to share something about Paris Hilton’s audition – it was actually quite funny. Before that, I only knew her as a celebrity brand, not as an actress or a person. To be honest, my only impressions of her came from gossip sites like TMZ or Perez Hilton.
I’ve met a lot of people at these events, probably around fifteen ‘Amber Sweets’ – really well-known names you’d recognize. Paris was one of the last I spoke with, and I actually held my breath when she walked in! Everyone started buzzing, like, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s Paris!’ But it wasn’t just the excitement; she immediately started digging deeper and really working the room more than anyone else there. You could just feel the difference when she entered.
He complimented her audition, noting how clearly she spoke and how much effort she’d put into preparing for the role. He also said she clearly understood the character of Amber.
Her audition was strong, but what really stood out was how clearly she expressed her ideas and how deeply she’d considered the character. She actually brought me a pink scrapbook filled with details for every scene she was in. It included a mood board of what she envisioned for the character, Amber Sweet, and honestly, she put more effort into that book than I probably did preparing for the whole movie! It was incredible – after she left, everyone just sat in silence for about twenty seconds, completely stunned. We all knew she was amazing.
He finished by saying Hilton’s audition was incredibly impressive, and he also complimented her dedication and natural talent as an actress.
She was incredible from the moment she entered the room. It was clear how much effort she’d put into preparing for the audition, even though it was for a role she didn’t even know she was trying out for. That’s when I truly saw the real Paris – not the public persona, but a dedicated actress.
Many people describe Hilton as a dedicated actress willing to take risks. While she isn’t typically praised for her versatility, her audition for the cult film Repo! – a movie that wouldn’t likely get made now – stands out as an unusual role and may hint at a hidden depth to her acting abilities.
Paris Hilton hasn’t focused much on acting since her part as Amber, which isn’t unexpected considering it’s not her primary career. However, her appearance in Repo! The Genetic Opera suggested she might have potential as an actress if she chose to pursue it further.
Paris Hilton will be voicing a character in Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, continuing her acting career. However, she probably isn’t dedicating as much time to acting now as she did when she starred in Repo! The Genetic Opera.
