7 Naruto Characters Who Were Cooler Before They Started Talking

Certain characters immediately grab your attention with a powerful presence. Their appearance does a lot of the work, creating an impression even before they speak. A striking mask, a unique weapon, a mysterious ability, or even a simple, intense gaze can make a character seem incredibly intimidating. But that initial impression can quickly disappear when they finally speak. It’s often at that moment that the character loses the intriguing mystery that made them compelling in the first place.

I’ve noticed a common pattern in a lot of stories – some characters initially come across as overly confident, not quite living up to the hype. Others start strong, seeming like real threats, but then turn out to be surprisingly immature or just plain silly. In Naruto, there are definitely characters who grow and become much more interesting as we learn more about them. But there are also a few who make a great first impression, appearing really cool, only to not quite deliver on that promise later on. They still stick with you, though, even if they don’t quite live up to that initial impression.

Kabuto Was Much Cooler When Nobody Knew What He Wanted

Early in Naruto, Kabuto comes across as exceptionally intelligent during the Chunin Exams. He initially seems friendly, composed, and harmless, but there’s a subtle sense that he’s hiding something. His quiet demeanor and extensive knowledge suggest he knows more than he lets on, giving him the air of a skilled spy before his true allegiances are revealed.

During the exam, Kabuto acts like a regular contestant, but it’s obvious he’s involved in something much bigger. The earlier version of his character is far more compelling than the later one, who constantly talks about strength and exceeding Orochimaru. As he reveals more about himself, he loses his unsettling aura and comes across as arrogant. The initial mystery surrounding Kabuto and his motivations is what makes him interesting. Later on, he just overexplains everything, answering questions no one even thought to ask.

Kiba’s Bark Is Usually Bigger Than His Bite

I always thought Kiba had a really striking design, especially when we first met the characters in Naruto. His spiky hair, the red marks like fangs, and those sharp teeth immediately made him memorable. Even before we got to know his personality, he came across as someone who could be a serious threat – a real rival to Naruto. What really set him apart was his unique fighting style; he didn’t rely on typical hand-to-hand combat. He moved and fought like a wild animal, and his connection with Akamaru just amplified that impression, making him truly stand out from the crowd.

I noticed that Kiba often tries to intimidate people with his words, putting down Naruto and generally acting like he’s better than everyone else. He comes across as incredibly confident, almost expecting to win every fight without effort. But that confidence seems to disappear when the actual fighting starts. His defeat by Naruto during the Chunin Exams really hurt his reputation; all that talk of being superior didn’t mean much when he was outsmarted. He’s still a skilled fighter, but honestly, he often talks a bigger game than he can deliver.

Kankuro’s Design Did the Heavylifting for His Character

Kankuro initially makes a striking impression at the Chunin Exams. His unique face paint, dark clothing, and confident demeanor give him a mysterious and intimidating aura. Before viewers understand his fighting style, he appears as an unpredictable opponent. The object he carries on his back adds to the intrigue, leaving its capabilities a secret for the moment. However, his personality starts to undermine this cool image when he begins to speak.

At the beginning of the series, Kankuro comes across as a boastful and mean-spirited character. He often teases Konohamaru and belittles others, seemingly trying to appear intimidating because of his connection to Gaara. While his puppet skills are imaginative, his unpleasant attitude diminishes his overall impact. It’s ironic, because puppet masters are uncommon and his abilities should be frightening, but his early conversations just make him seem like a frustrating pest.

Suigetsu Is More Boring Than His Introduction Suggests

Suigetsu makes a really strong first impression after the time skip. When Sasuke discovers him sealed inside a tank, it immediately establishes him as a powerful and dangerous character. His background with the Hidden Mist, his mysterious connections, and his quest to gather famous swords all contribute to this intimidating image. Claiming Zabuza’s sword further emphasizes that he’s continuing a dangerous and violent tradition.

When Suigetsu joins Sasuke’s team, the atmosphere shifts quickly. While he’s still powerful, he’s more of a playful troublemaker than intimidating. He spends a lot of time complaining, teasing Karin, and generally acting like an annoyance, which makes him less impressive than many fans expected. Although one scene shows him as a dangerous force, most of his dialogue portrays him as someone Sasuke needs to keep an eye on when they’re not battling.

Zaku Bragged His Way Into One of the Chunin Exams’ Most Embarrassing Losses

Zaku immediately comes across as a product of Orochimaru’s harsh experiments, even before we know much about his story. The tubes visible in his arms are unsettling, and his attacks, which rely on sound, make him a formidable opponent during the Chunin Exams. He appears to be a ruthless enemy with a dark past and aggressive fighting style. Compared to other members of the Sound ninja, Zaku most strongly embodies the idea of a body turned into a weapon, making a strong, intimidating first impression.

Despite his imposing appearance, Zaku quickly loses his threat as soon as he begins to speak. He’s overly boastful and doesn’t think things through. He relies heavily on his arm cannons, believing they can handle any situation, which makes his strategy predictable. Shino expertly exploits this weakness by using insects to clog the tubes in his arms, leading to his defeat. The loss is particularly humiliating for Zaku, as it highlights his foolish reliance on a single tactic.

Dosu’s Mystery Died the Moment He Challenged Gaara

Initially, Dosu appears more composed and threatening than his fellow Sound ninja. He’s unsettling, but in a deliberate, controlled manner – unlike Zaku, who immediately comes off as annoying. Dosu carefully observes, strategizes, and wields a sound weapon that feels effective and accurate. He seems to be the only member of his team who truly grasps the extent of the danger they face, which makes his later, foolish decision particularly impactful.

Dosu realizes Orochimaru is manipulating his team, and briefly shows some surprising insight. However, he then makes a disastrous decision to fight Gaara alone at night. By this point in the Chunin Exams, Gaara is established as a terrifying opponent, so challenging him solo wasn’t courageous—it was incredibly shortsighted. Dosu’s death makes his previous composure seem like a facade, as a single, poor choice completely undermines everything he’d presented to the world.

Hidan Has God-Tier Aura Until He Opens His Mouth

Hidan is a brilliantly designed character. His immortality adds a uniquely frustrating, yet compelling, element to battles. Everything about him – from the ritual circle he uses, to his connection with the Jashin cult, and the disturbing nature of his abilities – comes together to create a truly terrifying villain. Before his eccentric personality fully emerges, Hidan feels like an opponent who should make every fight genuinely frightening.

Honestly, when Hidan starts talking, it’s amazing – he goes from terrifying to hilarious! He’s just so loud, obnoxious, and, well, not the brightest guy, which somehow makes him really stick in your mind. It’s like he thinks being immortal means he doesn’t need to think, and that recklessness is exactly what Shikamaru exploits. He comes in like the embodiment of death, but talks like the biggest goofball in Akatsuki!
