Gareth Southgate, the former England football manager, will be the face of a new BBC documentary exploring what he sees as a growing problem for young men and boys.
On Monday, June 8th, BBC One will broadcast “Gareth Southgate: Changing the Game,” a program where he travels throughout the UK to understand why many young people feel directionless and explore potential solutions.
He plans to talk with students who are struggling in school, men facing unemployment, people who grew up without a father, and even prisoners who felt forced into criminal activity.

Southgate explained the documentary goes beyond simply looking at problems; it also focuses on finding ways to help young men in Britain today.
He explained that this was his latest effort to help young men and boys succeed and stay on track, instead of struggling.

This project has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m deeply thankful to everyone who shared their personal experiences with me. I hope the documentary helps shift how we talk about these issues and inspires us to help people reach their full potential.

According to Gian Quaglieni, a commissioning editor at the BBC, Gareth Southgate has a special opportunity to investigate why many young boys feel inadequate and to consider new approaches to support them.
This movie doesn’t focus on taking sides in debates; it genuinely explores the experiences and challenges faced by young people. These are crucial, often difficult, discussions that deserve to be acknowledged.
So, I just finished watching the first episode of this new BBC drama called Dear England. It’s about Gareth Southgate’s time managing the national team, covering everything from 2016 to 2024. Joseph Fiennes plays Southgate, and Jodie Whittaker is in it too, which is awesome. It just came out and you can stream it now, and honestly, it’s pretty good if you’re into football or just enjoy a solid drama.
Gareth Southgate: Changing the Game, a one-hour program, will be shown on BBC One on Monday, June 8th. You’ll also be able to watch it on BBC iPlayer.
