Movies about war, especially those taking place during World War II, consistently attract large audiences. Following the positive reception of Russell Crowe’s Nuremberg last year, a new World War II film starring Brendan Fraser is highly anticipated this year.
I’m really excited about the new movie! People are already sharing their thoughts, and so far, the response is great. It even premiered with an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a fantastic sign before it’s even officially released!
The film has received a score from critics before it even comes out in theaters, so the rating could change as more people share their thoughts. Currently, there isn’t a rating from general audiences available.
What Happens in Pressure?
Brendan Fraser is gaining attention now, but before his recent success, he portrayed General Dwight D. Eisenhower in the film Pressure. Eisenhower later became the 34th President of the United States after serving during World War II.
Anthony Maras directed and edited the war film, co-writing the script with David Haig. The film is adapted from Haig’s 2014 stage play, also titled Pressure. Alongside Jack Fraser, the film stars Kerry Condon (known from Better Call Saul) as meteorologist James Stagg, and Chris Messina (The White Lotus) with other actors in supporting roles.
This war movie focuses on the 72 hours leading up to D-Day, when the future of freedom was uncertain. General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Group Captain James Stagg must make a critical decision: proceed with the incredibly risky invasion, or potentially lose the war.
What Are Critics Saying About Pressure?
Critics are praising the new war drama, highlighting its strong cast and captivating storyline. Jeanne Kaplan of Kaplan vs. Kaplan described it as a “gripping true story about the 72 hours before D-Day,” and noted the excellent performances and filmmaking. Her colleague, David Kaplan, went further, calling it “easily one of the best films of the year” and commending the talent of everyone involved.
According to ScreenRant’s Brandon Zachary, both Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser deliver outstanding performances, captivating audiences and making even the somewhat lackluster script and direction engaging to watch.
While reviewers praised the film’s actors and interesting concept, they found the overall execution lacking. Danielle Solzman of Solzy at the Movies described it as “uneven,” and Mark Dujsik from Mark Reviews Movies felt the drama, though present, seemed “superficial.”
Pressure premieres in theaters on May 29.
