The Lincoln Lawyer Replacement Officially in the Works at HBO Ahead of Fifth and Final Season

As the fifth and final season of the Netflix series draws near, a new project is in the works to potentially fill the void. David E. Kelley, who adapted the show from Michael Connelly’s books, is currently developing a new series for HBO Max.

I’m really excited to hear that the team behind the successful adaptation of another Michael Connelly book is working on Welcome To Catalina! Apparently, it’s based on his latest bestseller, Nightshade, which came out in 2024. Knowing how well they did before, I have high hopes for this new crime drama.

Kelley is clearly a skilled adapter of books for television. Following the huge success of his show, The Pitt on HBO Max, the streaming service is now investing more in similar, episode-based detective dramas. Kelley is expected to remain a key player in this strategy, just as he was previously for HBO.

The Lincoln Lawyer Showrunner Reuniting With HBO Max

Kelley has worked with HBO before, most notably on the 2017 hit series Big Little Lies, starring Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. The show won several Primetime Emmy Awards, and Kidman also received a Screen Actors Guild Award for her performance.

According to Deadline, the new series Welcome To Catalina follows Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Detective Stilwell, who has been transferred to a quiet assignment on Catalina Island. While dealing with minor crimes like public intoxication and small thefts, he investigates a report of a body discovered at the bottom of the harbor.

When Will HBO Max’s Welcome to Catalina Debut?

We don’t know for sure yet. It’s still early days for Kelley and Welcome To Catalina.

So far, the cast hasn’t been announced, which shows how early in development the series still is. Kelley will executive produce alongside Matt Tinker, who is President of David E. Kelly Productions. They’re also bringing on several people who worked on The Lincoln Lawyer: Barry Jossen and Tana Jamieson from A+E Studios, and Ross Fineman and Michael Connelly.

Considering Kelley’s experience and HBO Max’s current plans for new shows, Welcome To Catalina is a series you’ll definitely want to watch out for in the coming months.
